Patricia Benner’s nursing theory is called Novice to Expert. Benner says that nurses “develop skills and understanding of patient care over time through a sound educational base as well as [through] experiences (Kathleen Dracup, 2004).” She proposed that, “one could gain knowledge and skills (“knowing how”) without ever learning the theory (“knowing that”)”, (Kathleen Dracup, 2004). Benner believes that nurses learn the practical knowledge (know how) through research and clinical experience (Kathleen Dracup, 2004).
