Extradition – Criminal Law
Candes Williams Grantham University Criminal Law September 8, 2015Panamas ex-leader Manuel Noriega has been extradited back to his home country from France and taken straight to a prison (“Manuel Noriega extradited to Panama to serve jail terms – BBC News,” 2011). He had committed numerous crimes while in power, including murder, corruption, and embezzlement. Before being extradited to Panama, he served over 20 years in prison in France, and the United States, for other crimes that he had committed. Included in these crimes were running a drug trafficking ring, and laundering money. I do, in my personal opinion believe that extraditing him to Panama, after his sentence where done in France, and America, was the right thing to do. He committed these crimes, and he needs to face the music. If he did not, it would have not only caused an uproar in the community, but it would have shown other criminals that it was ok to commit the crimes. In the article I read, it stated that Panama allowed prisoners over 70 years of age to serve their sentences at home. (“Manuel Noriega extradited to Panama to serve jail terms – BBC News,” 2011). I do not think that this is right, he should have to remain in jail until he either one, died, or two, completed his punishment. They were not just simple misdemeanor crimes, they were heinous, and viscous crimes. He murdered people, and was a wicked man. He needed to stay every second in jail. Who knows if he is released if he will continue on his acts of terror, and commit more crimes? The laws of extradition are different in different countries, as they should be (“Extradition laws,” 2015). It generally refers to one being sent to the place they committed there crime’s, and being charged with the crimes. Extradition is not only for legal purposes, but political ones as well. They usually only extradite those who have committed serious crimes. It cost a lot of money to do so, and it should only be spent on those who have done terrible things. In this case, it was rightly done.
