Thucydides Reaction PaperScott RawleyMosaics IIProfessor JankiewickzJanuary 23RD, 2015Thucydides Reaction Paper Chapters 6-8In the book, Thucydides On Justice, Power, and Human Nature, the author takes selections from The History of the Peloponnesian War and allows us to better grasp what happened during this period of time in Greece. A particular part that caught my eye while reading was the beginning of chapter six, when Brasidas marches into Northern Greece and speaks to the people. Brasidas entered the city of Acanthus expecting an ally but soon realized that the people were wary of him and his army. “ As for me, I have come not to harm the Greeks but to free them; and I have bound the Lacedaemonians by the solemn oath that the allies I bring in will be autonomous. (Woodruff 98).” This is a very important part of the book as it seems to be one of the higher regarded speeches during this time of war, in which Brasidas speaks to the Ancanthians and seemingly convinces them to join him as allies.
In all honesty, If I had to talk about the most interesting part of chapters six through eight, I would choose the speech of Brasidas. Being a good speaker, is something that I have always been impressed by and consider it a very underrated skill. Sometimes, It doesn’t even matter what you say, as long as you can carry yourself well, and have a strong clear voice. I actually took it a step further and tried comparing and contrasting some speeches given this week, considering the recent State of the Union and the multiple inauguration speeches that were given over the last week. I have always been a strong component of public speaking, so to read about Brasidas speaking in front of an unfavorable crowd of people that believed he was up to no good, was pretty thrilling to myself.
So the following are all about the “best” speeches of the week as a whole. First up, “Killed in Iraq.” “There Is No Meaning to Being Stupid” isn’t a very good speech by any means, but it is an interesting one. So far, a lot has been said about the speech, but I’ll give you one thing. Firstly, I think a lot of the comments on the entire post (including the original original post) said it was, well, great. That it was done just by people who wanted to be stupid. That it was done so that people could tell us what we thought. That it was good enough. And, of course, that it was. That it was a powerful sign and that, well, I’m not sure if I believed them, but I saw some of your posts as positive and not. I see that people are doing this to a level that I never intended for, that is the type thing, to be able to express feelings and thoughts before they’re actually shown to you. It shows that you feel the emotions of others, that you care and you care deeply, that so much people care about you.
Next, we learn a lot about the story people choose to give this entire series of speeches about and how religion played a role in this election, and how this was determined by what it said. In other words, it is the story of how religion came about. And, just to give a little bit of background behind the events, I want to mention the story of “The War on Poverty.” In a way, it represents the struggle to change the way we think about poverty, as someone on my political team said to me during the 2016 race, where I decided not to go out and spend the night being more involved and do public speaking. We’ve all been there and I think it should have been the part of the campaign campaign that you know really got an out. You need to put yourself in the role of mediator and I think that’s what we needed to do. So what had happened that actually helped us to take real action? Well, first, we talked about the campaign and the actual campaigning. After that talk, I spoke to a lot of people (the most recent being a majority of the current members) and they talked about how the campaign and the actual campaign had changed, the way that people were talking about this election and the way that people were talking about the candidates and the candidates running for both parties and that the candidate on the other side was running for the wrong candidate. That people were now taking care of each other. So I talked (that I remember), and you know what, I am saying
