Charina Shaine N. TeberioBSM-3Reaction on: 3rd State of the Mangrove Summit: Central and Eastern Visayas Mangroves are salt-tolerant trees and they are adapted to life in harsh coastal conditions because of this they provide a lot of benefits to the marine environment and the society. It is also widely known as ‘rainforest of the sea’. Mangrove swamps or forests are said to be a home for different kinds of fishes. Mangrove wood is also very resistant when it comes to rotting and insect plague making it the perfect material in building houses that are located near the shorelines. Mangrove roots help a lot in stabilizing the coastlines and also in averting erosion from continuous storms and waves. This plant also houses a few endangered and threatened species, like the: American alligator, American crocodile, Green sea turtle, Loggerhead sea turtle, Southern bald eagle, West Indian manatee, Brown pelican and a lot more. Of all the world’s more than 70 species of Mangroves, fortunately our country, the Philippines house at most 46 species in various parts of the archipelago. Though Philippines is known to be one of the largest mangrove biodiversity in the world, year by year there had been massive mangrove losses because of aquaculture in a lot of parts of the country mainly at Pangasinan and Iloilo because of this we become more and more vulnerable against natural disasters making as unable to recover quickly whenever it occurs. With climate change steadily increasing its impact almost yearly, it decreases the chance of the mangroves to recover in a normal pace. With numerous people helping one another in finding a solution for the mangroves, just understanding how vital the role of the mangroves in our ecosystem I do believe that if we prove how mangroves help improve the health of the Philippine coastal ecosystem, we could convince our local lawmakers to make bills that could protect the mangroves in order for us to also protect our environment and ourselves. Though protect the mangroves might be useless for some because they are not aware, we should also make an effort to educate other people of its benefits to our environment because in the end, it is for our wellbeing and for the next generations to come.
