This characterization of Holden reveals how he is still in the stage if adolescence because he doesnt care too much about his education, and he chooses to not be proactive about his learning. This demonstrates his childish tendencies because he is not prepared to handle the responsibility.

This instance highlights both immature tendencies as well as a little maturity because Holden, although not seeming to care too much about his future, displays some curiosity when he really thinks about what his later days will look like.

This exhibits Holdens transition into adulthood to some degree because he realizes that he has been lazy and the lack of effort that he has put forth in school is beginning to become a real problem. When he quickly states that its only a mere phase, the child inside him is also revealed because he wants to take the blame off himself because he cant handle the responsibility just yet.
