According to the authors, cultural intelligence has three components: cognitive, motivational, and behavioral. The cognitive aspect refers to the skills needed to conceptualize a new culture and to gather information about a new world. The motivational component deals with the desire to adapt to the other culture, not only to see it as different. Understanding the motivational aspect requires a deep understanding of the motivation process and of its components, such as self-efficacy, self-concept, and goal setting. Understanding others culture and wishing to adapt to it is not enough if one is unable to move forward and overcome ones natural reactions to that culture. The behavioral component is the "capability of an individual to actually engage in behaviors which are adaptive."
