The government has done a lot to improve the wellbeing of Aboriginal people. They have done a lot of initiatives, some of these initiatives include Closing the Gap and the indigenous advisory council.
One of the initiatives the government ran to improve the wellbeing of Indigenous Australians is closing the gap. Closing the gap relates to wellbeing and equality because the aim of the program is to reduce the number of disadvantages among Aboriginal Australians. Closing the gap started when Tom Calma, an Aboriginal elder urged the Australian government to commit to achieving equality for indigenous people. This lead to the government launching the program in 2007. The issue that leads to closing the gap is the protests for equality by various NGOs to achieve equality of indigenous Australians by 2030.
Closing the gap was implemented by the government in 2007. Some of the problems or issues related to Closing the gap is that the government needs to bring proof of indigenous voice with them defining what they want to improve on and the government trying to work on it. They are many reasons why this initiative hasn’t been successful. I know this because there is still a huge gap between Indigenous Australians and Europeans in Education and Health.
Another initiative the government ran to improve the wellbeing of Indigenous Australians is the Indigenous Advisory Council. The Indigenous Advisory Council is a council that represents Indigenous people in Government and tells the prime-minister about the issues facing them today. The indigenous advisory council started when the Prime Minister and the Minister for Indigenous Affairs Senator the Hon Nigel Scullion announced on 8 February 2017 the first six members appointed for the second term of the Prime Minister’s Indigenous Advisory Council.
