Effective Communication
Communication is the act of exchanging of information either written or verbal. There are two different types of verbal communication; these two types of communication are verbal and non-verbal. When an individual use non-verbal communication he or she uses gestures and facial expressions. Non-verbal communication can send conflicting messages when one is also speaking. Often non-verbal and verbal communication can confuse individuals because the verbal can be saying one thing and the non-verbal communication can be saying something else. When using non-verbal communication one needs to make sure that he or she pays attention to what he or her message is conveying. As the saying goes “actions speak louder than word.” Non-verbal communication can change the entire message an individual is trying to say. According to Dr. Albert Mehrabian states 7% of messages are verbal, 38% is vocal and 55% is non-verbal. The function of non-verbal communication can reinforce what is being said verbally Non-verbal communication con also contradict what a verbal message is saying. One example of this would be a look of boredom on an individuals face when another individual is speaking. In using non-verbal cues an individual is also repeating what he or she is saying verbally it can also contradict what an individual is saying. When regulating in a non-verbal communication an individual is trying to control the way the way the conservation is going. Substitution is a way of speaking without verbally speaking the words. When the individual wants to make a point in a conservation one will use accenting. Accenting is telling the recipient that what is being said is important to him or her.
The process of verbal communication is affected by three different things. The first thing that affects verbal communication is the message sent by the sender. The second thing that affects verbal communication is the message the receiver understands from the individual sending the message. The last issue that affects verbal communication is the interference going on when the message is sent by the receiver, when an individual is sending a message to a receiver him or her states a meaning. This message can either support or contradict a message by non-verbal communication. An individual must be careful because his or hers attitude or emotions can affect what he or she is saying. There are four different types of communications. These four types of communication are written, telecommunications, third party, and face to face. Written communication can be by fax, letter, or memo. Some individuals believe that if he or she uses this type of communication that his or her message will be understood. When using written communication an individual can interpret the message his or her own way. It also will not allow the individual an immediate reaction. It also will not allow an individual to ask questions.
