Baddassss is a film that is brought up today as having a strong political message, but
in my opinion is only offered an illusion of power to the black audience. This can be
supported by such reasons at the time period they were in, and also the actual context of
the film
This film came out in the 1970s, along when blaxpoitation films be popular. The
70s time period was after the Civil Rights era of the 1960s, and after such groups such as
the Black Panthers that were reasoning about black power. This movie wasnt bringing
in anything new, and wasnt really leaving an impact except for some low budget, witty,
sexual, black characters. The racial cartoon such as coons were dying down at this time
and were mostly popular in the early 20th century. What blaxpoitation films did was offer
a type of movie which black people dominated in their own right. When Baddassss was
released, it was to a limited audience in which most of the customers were black people
in urban areas. The natural rate of equality would have elevated the same with or
without these type of films.
This film and the others following it in this era usually stuck to the one message of
black pride, and black power. This one specific film included a lot of raunchy material,
including a lot of sex and murder. The only two somewhat messages in this movie were
the black man killing the cops and escaping, and the message at the end about him coming back on day. This doesnt seem to me that it provides a political message, rather

a little bit of inspiration to black people at the time. It really did nothing political except
