Reading “Sister of My Heart” made me go through a series of emotions because of the heartbreaking truth that has unfolded in the family. The main thematic intention that I personally got from reading this book was that, even though one can face the many rough situations in life, there will always be a good balance of those around you, which will help you persevere through anything. Our story takes place in India and Sudha is one of our main characters and I’ve made her blue because she is a very calm and mellow person who will always put others before herself. Another main character is Anju, she is represented as red because of her bold and independent personality, but they’re all good intentions. The two characters share a tight sisterly bond despite their differences. I chose to paint the traditional yin yang to symbolize the balance the two cousins share because they are the opposites of each other, but compliment really well when theyre together. I placed Sudha above Anju because Sudha was born first and is someone that Anju really looks up to. There are many issues that occur for both of the girls, which is represented by the gray background. Their fathers died at an early age, which made them more mysterious because they were an outcast. Despite not having a father figure in their life, they had their family driver, Singhji. Through the tough times the girl’s family faced financially, Singhji devoted his life to them. As the girls finished up high school, their mothers promptly arranged their marriages. Sudha was the typical housewife that did everything to please her mother-in-law or else she would be scolded upon. Anju on the other hand, married a guy named Sunil who was in love with Sudha’s beauty. This caused Anju to become jealous, but that feeling went away once Anju got her visa and left for the United States. Even though the girls were thousands of miles away from one another, they kept in touch and would always be concerned for each
