HEALTHYPromoting good health and nutrition and providing an environment that contributes to the prevention of illness. Whenever children are together, there is a chance of spreading infection. This is especially true among infants and toddlers who are likely to use their hands to wipe their noses or rub their eyes and then handle toys or touch other children. The children and teachers in my class wash their hands throughout the day including: when they arrive at the facility, before and after handling food, after using the potty or changing a diaper, after wiping noses and after coming into contact with any bodily fluids. The proper handwashing sequences is, wet the hands, add the liquid soap, wash for twenty seconds, rinse, dry, turn off the water using a paper towel. There is an allergy board that has a picture of each child that has specific dietary needs and a list of foods they are to avoid. My communication with the children and their parents is a major component to maintaining a healthy classroom environment. I continuously monitor my class for symptoms of illness, unusual behavior and changes in their physical appearance (scratches, rashes, bug bites, etc). All play area materials are cleaned daily to promote good health and to minimize the spread of infectious diseases. I wipe down all surfaces used by children (tables, furniture, countertops etc.). The floors are swept, mopped and vacuumed. My disinfectants and sanitizing solutions are present and stored appropriately. Bleach and water solution is used to disinfect and sanitize. Cleaning supplies are stored in labeled containers, out of reach in a locked storage closet. I implement sanitary diapering and toileting procedures. Covered plastic-lined containers are available for used tissues, diapers, and other biohazards. I facilitate the appropriate mealtime experience by establishing a relaxed mealtime routine that makes eating pleasant for each child. I provide the appropriate amount for each child. I encourage my class to take their time when drinking from their cups and to use their utensils. I do not use meals/snacks as a reward or punishment and I do not require children to finish the food on their plate. I encourage my class to eat while seated and our center facilitates “Family-Style-Dining”.
