I have had a passion for medicine since I was in Elementary school. I am the rare person who has not changed her answer to the “what do you want to be when you grow up?” question. I have always wanted to be a doctor. The type of doctor may have changed throughout the years, but the want to help people has not. I still want to be a doctor. I registered for this course because in all honesty it is the prerequisite for the Physician Shadowing course that the University of Florida offers. I shadowed a physician this summer and absolutely loved every second of the days. I would like to continue to shadow physicians as it really opens your eyes as to what the field of medicine is really like. Interacting with patients early on will help you to learn how to interact with your own patients when you someday have your own practice. I hope to get an understanding of what different doctors do by taking this course. I may discover through the lessons a whole other field of medicine that better suits me than the ones I am currently interested in.
I am interested in healthcare because personal health is far more important than money or fancy cars. It is the biggest asset that a person has in life (1). By keeping good health, you function on a much higher level than if you were to be sick. You are doing your body a great justice if you invest in a healthy lifestyle. Your personal health does not only affect just you though. Close family and friends suffer when your health suffers. Both of my grandmothers health has been deteriorating, and it is a sad event to watch. I would love for both of them to be seated in the church on the day of my wedding, but their health will make the final decision for them.
Not only is healthcare as a whole important, but the medicine within the healthcare system is equally as important. Sometimes maintaining good health would not be possible unless the use of medicine was involved. Getting sick is not always avoidable. Genetics can pre-determine who gets sick and when, not to mention the plethora of people suffering from allergies that cannot even enjoy the coming of the new spring. Medicine is one of the most important aspects of life. It is the preventative system to ailing health (2). In the short time of this summer, I saw the wonders that medicine did for the patients suffering from various types of arthritis and other autoimmune disorders. Medicine aids in bringing back the quality of life you would not normally have when suffering from ailments. Medicine has been around for ages, and while the technology and methods have changed throughout the years, the idea and concept are still the same (2). Medicine is the key to life.
