Outline-COMM 106General Purpose: My general purpose is to inform others of the technology in the vehicles they drive today and the vehicles they will drive in the future.Specific Purpose: By the end of my speech, my audience will understand the technology in their vehicle and how they all work together as a whole.Thesis and Preview: Today I am going to be discussing the technology in the vehicles you drive today, which will include electronics, safety systems, and software.Introduction: Have you ever thought of the technology that is in your car? Have you ever thought of what it might be able to do? Is it crazy to think that our vehicle may soon be able to monitor  our home security, cellphones, and even your health status? YES, that’s right, your health status. According to Eliza Strickland, a senior associate editor for the IEEE Spectrum, in an article about 3 ways cars could monitor your health on the 19th of May 2017, Ford has estimated that by 2050 1/3 of their customers will be 65 or older. With that, they have integrated plates into the driver’s seat which with every heart beat sends an electrical signal into the seat, which can then monitor your heart rate. The thing is that there is not yet a market for this so not many know about it. The software in your vehicle is what allows your car to perform all the things it needs to in order to get you to your next destination safely. Then the electronics are there for some luxury purposes. I would like to quote Henry Ford who said “Don’t find fault, Find a remedy”. With wanting to be an automotive engineering these are some of the features that engineers will look into for further improvements but not to find faults but instead remedies as Henry Ford Stated.  You rely on these systems every day and every time you are in any vehicle. I will talk about the technology in the vehicles we drive today, which include electronics, safety systems, and software because almost any car will have these basic systems that we rely on. Let’s begin with the electronics in the vehicle.
First, the electronics in our vehicle is what makes the driving experience so user friendly and gives us the luxuries that we would like.Navigation helps us to get to our destination with ease. Most of the time.Bluetooth- allows us to connect our devices to the vehiclePlaying musicHands free  Onstar which provides a variety of in-vehicle services (also has a smartphone app)Automatic crash responseEmergency servicesStolen vehicle assistanceRoadside assistanceTransition: The electronics in a vehicle are just a small part of the technology in a vehicle. These systems are working with a multitude of other parts like the safety system for example.Second, we have the safety system of a vehicle which your life depends on.Your Braking system is a huge partABS (Antilock Braking System)Air bagsProtect you from further injury in the event of a collision6 airbags is standard, but since 2014 safety has increased and most vehicles now contain around 10Traction and Stability controlKeep your vehicle from losing traction and spinning outKeeps your vehicle in control in bad weatherTransition: All of these are great but what about the software that runs all of these at the same time faster than you could think. Finally, the software that runs our vehicle.Runs all of our car luxuriesRadioClimate controlSteering controlsnavigationOperates all safety systemsAirbagsTraction controlABSTransition: These are all just a few pieces of the technology in your vehicle. I chose these systems because these are some basic systems that almost every car has. There are still those newer vehicles with assisted parking, assisted driving (helps to keep the vehicle in between the lines), and hands free.
