The Joy Luck of Club is a story about four immigrant women in American and each of their daughters who are all growing up in American. The novel is formed by the experiences of these eight women. Four old ladies are growing up in China in feudalism. They are suffering a lot and have a miserable life before they immigrate to American. So all of them want their daughter have a bright and happy life unlike them, so that they always try to plan for their young girls. However four girls growing up in American have different characters to their mothers. They have independent personality, and want to live a life control by their own ways. So there are always some collisions between mother and daughter. But after all, the reasons why these collisions exist are thy care and love each other. From their sufferings and striving in lives, the author represents two kinds of women growing in the different countries, and the generation gaps between mothers and children. But even though they have different lives, their love to each other is the same. The story is led out on the club, the joy luck club which is set up by the four mothers. They play Majiang in the club party, three old women and one daughter, whose mother is passed away. It is a unique scene because Majiang is a typical Chinese culture symbol and they are in American. This scene indicates that there must be some differences between Chinese and American culture and lead to many conflictions between two generations growing in different cultures. The particular event is the attitudes to their life of mothers and daughters when they were young are so different. In the tradition of old China, women are not allowed to have their own ideas, even no the right to decide their own life. When they are children, they must totally follow their parents. When they get married they must be obedient to their husbands and parents-in-law. They can not rebel any of them. However, children in America can choose their life in the way they like. They have their own thoughts about what their lives should be like, and they always fight for it, even go against with their parents. The different living environment leads to their different way of thinking and living.
