Moral talk is an interesting subject to discuss and the reading provided some insight that I am familiar with when it comes to this subject. Why do companies/organizations not promote moral talk within their company? I think there are many reasons for this. For one, employees are to follow the rules, excel in the work, and live out the values and mission of their respected organization. Employees report to management and these are the individuals that oversee their daily performance. Management is individuals who are supposed to earned credibility and individuals who are known to help lead the company/organization in the right direction. This makes it difficult for moral talk to be easily welcome in an organization, because when an employee introduces an issue or topic of concern can mean that the individual is going against the rules, values, and mission that have been put in place. Another big issue I have with moral talk in a company/organization is that management doesnt know how to properly handle it. Management typically is earned through great performance and success and then one is promoted to this new level without any to probably little training. There are many managers that are in these roles because they did their job very well before the promotion but have no clue on how to teach that in a team of employees.
The reading state that to change the nature of moral talk that more open and direct conversations have to be introduced by management. Management has to introduced or motivate discussions from their employees. Management can help make employees feel comfortable and at ease to share their concerns. In addition, management has to be supportive of their employees issues and provide feedback. This simply opens dialogue and it also builds trust between the manager and the employees. This is key because without trust or a healthy working environment – employees arent going to talk. Their career is their life and they arent going to do anything to jeopardize it. The book state businesses have to learn to incorporate moral expressions and arguments in their exchanges. This is very true but businesses have to find a way to help allowed these things to be done. Businesses have to invest the time and even proper training amongst their managers for understanding and knowing how to incorporate it within their teams.
“Moral talk ought to be used primarily to identify problems, to consider issues, to advocate and criticize policies, and to justify and explain decisions.” This is very important but probably is one of the biggest issues concerning moral talk because it isnt structured to focus on these things. Again, a business investing in their business and providing the proper training and skills in their managers will help guide the business in moral talk resulting in employees speaking of issues and management being aware and making the necessary changes to improve the situation.
