Abortion: Pro-life vs. pro-choice
Which came first, the chicken or the egg? Such a question has puzzled
Americans for many, any years. I have heard all the arguments, but is
there really a right or wrong answer to this question? In my opinion
no. Sure I lean toward one side of the argument but I cannot give a
definite answer to that question. I have the exact same feelings on
the subject of abortion. Abortion has been a highly debatable subject
for many years. I used to be a supporter of the pro-life cause,
meaning in short I was against abortion in every aspect, there were no
exceptions when it came to abortion, it was simply murder, and I would
not stand for it. After a few years of being pro-life I started to
question why I believed so much in a cause that took choice away from
women. After all we do live in America, land of the free, which should
entitle us (women) the right to choose whether or not we want to carry
a baby to term. It is thoughts like that that led me to where I am
today supporting the cause of pro-choice.
As a pro-choicer, I believe that a woman has the right to choose and
the right to privacy when she makes that choice. I believe that not
one person has the right to tell another that she cannot have an
abortion. What if carrying a baby to full term is life threatening to
a woman? Should a woman have to die so an unborn child can live? I do
not think so. Yes, that fetus is alive, it is human, and yes having an
abortion would constitute murder of an unborn child. Yes, pro-lifers
we know it is murder, but there must be some exceptions. I know that
if I were pregnant (even if it was planned) and I found out six weeks
into my pregnancy that if I carried the child to full term it would be
life threatening. Yes, I would think about it fully, but ultimately I
would more than likely come to the conclusion of abortion. I would not
die for an unborn child, and frankly I do not know any person that
would. Although I am sure there are some people out there that would
gladly die, if it meant that their child was going to live a good
healthy life.
Then there is the argument that even if the mother died during
childbirth and the child lived, would that child really live a happy
life without a mother. There is a bond between a mother and a child
like none other. There are things that babies and children get from
there mothers that they cannot get anywhere else. Children need
mothers. Not to mention the fact that a child growing up without a
mother is more than likely going to be psychologically damaging in the
long run for them.
Somewhere in America, according to the department of justice, a woman
is raped every two minutes. What does this have to do with abortion
you ask? Probably more than you think. I find it hard to believe if a
woman gave birth to child that was conceived only because she was
raped, that she would ever be able to love it the way that she should.
The very face of her child would be a constant reminder of the awful
crime that was committed against her will. I believe that if a woman
is raped, then abortion is acceptable. When a woman is raped, what is
happening to her is not consensual, and she has no control over the
situation.
With current technology, birth defects are becoming easier to detect
every day and earlier at that. Finding out that there is something
life threatening or something that will affect your child living a
normal life has got to be very devastating. In terms of abortion, I
believe that if a child is going to be born with mental disabilities
to the
point that the child will be a ?vegetable? all its life then abortion
should be an acceptable alternative. I look at this in terms of the
child, not the parent. If the child will not ever learn to talk, eat
by its self, or perform everyday tasks, or even think for itself then
why should it be brought into this world? I know it sounds harsh, but
its almost as if they will be babies for their entire lives. What if a
child were to be born a paraplegic? The child would never live
normally never do things on its own, constantly be relying on someone
or something for everyday tasks. Not to mention the fact that the
child would know it was different, would know that it would never get
to do normal child things, etc. If this birth defect could be detected
before birth, then in my opinion abortion would be acceptable.
