The first 10 chapters of Acceleration basically tell us about Duncan and how he has come to be what he is now as well as who he hangs out with and where. Duncan is a 17 year old teen who lives in modern toronto he has a crappy summer job sifting through lost items found underground in the toronto subway system. Before duncan tells us too much about what goes on currently in his life he tells his story about something that happened six months earlyer at a beach. Duncan heard a girl screaming in the water but carried on swimming thinking it was just a playful scream coming from a little girl but what he didnt know was she was drowning. Duncan realised that he was the closest to her and that the people on the beach had no chance in getting there in time so he swam over to save her but couldnt find her in the merky water and was tramatized for life.
