Born in Malaga, Spain in 1881 Pablo Picasso became one of the greatest and most influential artists in the 20Th century, and he is still today. Him and his artwork are still remembered and shown around the world. His father gave up painting and gave Picasso all his brushes once he discovered Picassos Talent. To me he is an artist that will always be here for future generations. He is one of those artist that you might not even know anything about, but when you hear his name its familiar. That is how much his art influences the world.
The painting I chose is located in the McNay Art Museum in San Antonio, is called The Potrait of Sylvette. Picasso painted this portrait in 1954, when he saw this elegant beautiful women with a high ponytail, he couldnt help but convince her to be his model.
The full name of the girl in this portrait is Lydia Sylvette David, also known by her married name Lydia Corbett. She is a very shy lady that would wear long skirts, because she was very insecure and didnt like herself. Unlike most of Picassos models, had an interest on this particular one, he saw her solely as an object of artistic admiration. (Auster) He transformed her beautiful face in an analytical way. David was only nineteen when Picasso saw her, he had requested charis for his studio from a chair maker name Toby Jellinek, who lived across the street and when he delivered the chairs Jellinek brought his fiancée with him, Sylvette David. A few days later Picasso showed a drawing of the young lady from memory and convinced David to model for him. He drew her profile in a variety of ways with her hair drawn in a high ponytail. In 1954 he the David portraits where created and Picasso was 74 years old at the time. Sometimes he would use color, and other times she would simply be drawn. In some portraits she looks realistic and in others she is made from geometric forms and abstract. He would sometimes go towards cubism or he would use flatness. She would draw while Picasso would create her portrait and she later became an artist herself. Picasso was affirming life while exploring his appreciation for beauty. (Auster)
Later on the David portraits were published and became so famous, that it even influenced female fashion. Many young ladies, including famous women starting wearing a high ponytail, making the style very popular.
This is the portrait I saw. I look at it and I feel that I can relate to it, that
