Where else can you go swimming, play basketball, workout and socialize with friends in the same place? A lot of people didnt know that their local YMCA offers all of these things. Many people of our generation take advantage of the sports & fitness services of their local YMCA or more commonly known as the “Y”. Even those familiar with the organization and engage in their activities may know very little about the YMCAs mission or their history. I came to the conclusion to select this topic because I have a broad knowledge of this wonderful organization and the YMCA has changed my life in several ways.
Originally founded in London in 1844, the Young Mens Christian Association is now active in over 15,000 neighborhoods in America. The YMCAs focus revolves around three areas of concern. Their main concern and aim is to help children and teens realize their full potential. Through childcare and early learning programs, they provide a safe place for children to learn the skills and values they will need for a brighter future. They also offer group sports, swimming lessons, and other programs to help develop childrens physical health and self-confidence. An assortment of camps are also available where kids can explore nature and build lasting friendships.
The Ys second focus is healthy living. The fitness facilities, which is the aspect of the Y that most people are familiar with, and a wide variety of educational programs and recreational activities also further the organizations commitment to a healthy lifestyle for all. Because the YMCA is interested in the persons overall health, they also offer group activities such as cooking classes, Bible study, and foreign language courses. They also hold an annual Healthy Kids Day which is an event meant to encourage parents and kids to keep their minds and bodies active during the summer months while school is out.
The YMCAs third area of focus is on social responsibility. They are committed to bringing communities together and giving back. Food programs offered by the YMCA provide nutrition for children during the summer or after school. They also offer social services, such as substance abuse counseling and employment training. In addition, they serve as an advocate for their communities, influencing public policy on issues such as education and child welfare.
In conclusion, its commitment to health and youth development reaches not only to this continent but also 120 countries around the world. Through the generosity of donors and volunteers, the YMCA is able to deliver on its promise to all of the various groups who benefit from its programs. So the next time you are lifting weight, playing basketball,
