Informative Speech
General Purpose: To inform.
Specific Purpose: To inform my audience on the ridiculously high-priced college
textbooks and how congress is trying to regulate the market.
Thesis: With the rise in much tuition, theres is a need to regulate the forever
rising costs of college textbooks.
Introduction
The price for going to a post secondary school has increased.
According to the National Public Policy and Higher Education Ohio, along with the rest of the nation has received an “F” in college affordability.
Tuition rates are at a constant rise as are the required text for many courses.
Congress has two bills purposed to aide college students, such as ourselves, to afford the required text.
Bill HR.3567 will investigate the price difference of textbooks between the United States market and the same text in foreign markets.
Bill HR.4243 will give a $1000 credit to college students for a year of textbooks.
[We as students of Kent State are directly persecuted by the rise in college costs.]
Body
Many members of Congress are working on lowering college rates.
Higher education schools are receiving affordability Fs all across our nation.
Kent State tuition has risen 13% since last school year.
Textbooks on average have increased 32.8 % since 1998. (according to the National Association of College Stores)
Congress has purposed two bills to help lower the affordability of schools.
HR.3567 was introduced to discover the reasons for the price difference for textbooks in the U.S. market and foreign markets.
This bill has thirteen representative co-sponsors; three of which are Ohio representatives.
Representative Dennis Kucinch of the 10th district
Representative Stephanie Tubb Jones of the 11th district
And Representative Tim Ryan of the 17th district; which includes University of Akron and Kent State University in his jurisdiction.
This Bill, 3567, requires the General Accounting office to conduct an investigation of the high price in college text books.
3. The Bill argues, “its in the interest of the Nation to ensure that the
People of the United Sates have the opportunity to obtain a
postsecondary education.
B. Another Bill in Congress is HR.4243.
1. Bill 4243 is currently being tossed around in committees in
the House of Representatives.
2. 4243, will give persons responsible for paying the high-priced
college burdens a $1000 dollar credit per year for textbooks.
