Make a Living and Make a Life
Make a Living and Make a Life
The quote, “we make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give” by Winston Churchill is a very powerful statement. Churchill implication is that people can support themselves by earning money to obtain the trappings of life. Perhaps, that is not enough. Living a life without giving to others is no life at all.

Making a living is a plan for sheer survival. Survival in todays society is merely paying the bills, buying food and sundries, paying the rent and such. The idea is to settle for the least possible in order to get by, or as it is called; survival. Making a life is more than knowing what one wants to achieve by working hard. Making a life starts at home and progresses through life experiences, and stokes the fire of individualism. Through hard work and giving to others, man can achieve a powerful unity with others. This goal is achieved when it provides a value to an individuals life and when it helps to build a loving lifestyle community. As Elizabeth states in her blog, “We Make a Life By What We Give,” “After graduating from college and beginning to learn about what making a life in the so called “real world” meant, I found that a life focused solely around working to make a living was something I have never been cut out for.” Elizabeth realized that in addition to going into the real world to make a living, making a life is also vital. “We make a living by what we get” meaning the work we do to earn pay to buy the material things is what we get out of life. Many people seem to expect better than what they can get. Not everyone can have the same life. In order to “make a life”; people have to give to others. Not necessarily by giving away money, but by giving to loved ones and the community by using their hearts and minds.

In our society, the majority of people seem to be more focused on making a living rather than making a life. Although they are often confused, putting more thought into the meaning will show that it is not. Both making a life and a living have similar things such as money, a career and enjoying a variety of social activities.. When a person puts their heart into something important than themselves, that is making a life. When making a living, people focus too much on how to make more money. They tend to settle for what they can find so they can “pay the bills” and end up not following their dreams.

The idea of making a life is by giving to others is a true statement. Making a living is a must, but what is the quality of life when making a living? When time, energy and talent are given, a person is likely to become more satisfied and happy with their life. When they give to others, they
