History
In the beginning, there was just sea. Along came a determined team of island builders and marketers. Working in unison, they successfully developed and sold these former plots of sea as valuable real estate for the chemical business.
This is the tale of Jurong Island, about making the impossible possible. A story of determination, struggle and courage. Today, Jurong Island is home to over 88 leading petroleum, petrochemical, specialty chemical and supporting companies from around the world, including the top 50 Global Companies like Air Liquide, Air Products, Akzo Nobel, Asahi Kasei, BASF, Celanese, Chevron Philips, Ciba Specialties Chemicals, Dainippon Ink & Chemicals, Dupont, Eastman Chemical, ExxonMobil, Huntsman Corp, Mitsui Chemicals, Shell, Sumitomo Chemical, Teijin and Rohm and Haas. Today, Jurong Island. Tomorrow, the beacon of the chemical world.
Achievements
Manufacturing has played a key role in Singapores industrialisation and economic development. It has been a major engine of our economic growth. Our manufacturing sector will face increasingly keen competition from other countries and we must make a concerted effort to ensure that it remains globally competitive. We must find innovative ways and means to offer investors value for their money.
Jurong Island is a good example of the ingenuity that we need. By enabling industry integration on the island, we generate significant synergy and economies of scale for tenants. These gains help to overcome Singapores resource limitation.
To date, Singapores achievements in the Chemicals industry include:
One of the top oil refining centres in the world
One of the top three oil trading and price discovery centres in the world
