During World War 1 Rasputin was accused of being a unpatriotic influence on the courts. Rasptin also was accused of being of being a German spy. When Rasputin wanted to go to the front lines and bless the Russian troops, the commander and chief grand duke Nicholas promised to hang him if he showed up. Rasputin claimed that the Russian army would have no success until tsar took over command. I believe this was a plot to get him away so Rasputin could put his plan in effect with Alexandra.
When tsar Nicholas was away at war Rasputin started to influence Alexandra. In his success of doing that he became her personal advisor. He quickly convinced her into filling the government offices with his own hand picked candidates. Rasputiin also had sexual intercourse with the upper class women for political favors. Russians economy was declining and many placed the blame on Alexandra and Rasputin.
