The Prototype Coca-Cola RecipeThe Prototype Coca-Cola RecipeThe prototype Coca-Cola recipe was formulated at the Eagle Drug and Chemical Company, a drugstore in Columbus, Georgia, by John Pemberton, originally as a coca wine called Pembertons French Wine Coca.[4][5] He may have been inspired by the formidable success of Vin Mariani, a European coca wine.[6]
In 1886, when Atlanta and Fulton County passed prohibition legislation, Pemberton responded by developing Coca-Cola, essentially a nonalcoholic version of French Wine Coca.[7] The first sales were at Jacobs Pharmacy in Atlanta, Georgia, on May 8, 1886.[8] It was initially sold as a patent medicine for five cents[9] a glass at soda fountains, which were popular in the United States at the time due to the belief that carbonated water was good for the health.[10] Pemberton claimed Coca-Cola cured many diseases, including morphine addiction, dyspepsia, neurasthenia, headache, and impotence. Pemberton ran the first advertisement for the beverage on May 29 of the same year in the Atlanta Journal.[11]
[12] Coca-Cola became the first beer to be made available in the United States during the 1880s.[13]
The New Orleans Saints took the field for the first time from the Pemberton Clinic in Pemberton, Louisiana on March 1, 1889.[14]
Founded in 1885, Pemberton worked on the clinical trials of alcoholics in a series of experiments of drug therapy for the treatment of alcoholism.[20][21] After the initial successful testing on alcoholics in 1893, Pemberton sought a partner in 1895 to work on a major trial of cannabis.[22] In 1896, after being approached by the National Federation of Alcoholic Beverages (NFLB), a sponsor of the program, the U.S. Government provided financing to establish the Pemberton Clinic, which was established within the U.S. Department of Health: The Pemberton Clinic has grown and has expanded rapidly on its own, to reach new health care needs, including for young adults.[23] Pemberton has partnered with several major pharmaceutical companies to sell the cannabis-linked medicines to doctors and researchers:Cannabis Med by Canna Laboratories and the San Marino Company[/c] and Sanofi-Aventis Therapeutics by Canev.[24] With the purchase of this small, low-cost drug-safety product and additional marketing money, the Pemberton Clinic was able to establish the Pemberton Group and be incorporated as a pharmaceutical company in 1926. In July of that year, when that company purchased and established the Pemberton Clinic, the company expanded its drug-trafficking operations to include two major production routes: the pharmaceuticals in a medical device business,[25] and a recreational drug business.[26] However, following the demise of the pharmaceutical corporation in 1937, the Pemberton Group was able to expand its drug-trafficking operations to provide marijuana and other medicines to those who were willing to use it. To this end, the group developed the first commercial products for medicinal use.
The Pemberton Group is located at 2350 S. Sibley Street, Atlanta, Georgia 35256.
