Her account of events is the only story the reader must analyze and believe. Mrs. Grose is the next most believable character. Her only shortcoming in that respect is her simple-minded innocence and her subjection to suggestion. One is forced to wonder if this character has any will or desire to think on her own, or if she was born, raised, and hired only to follow the instruction and logic of others. Mrs. Groses agreeable nature allows the governess a great deal of power almost as if she were put into the story as an affirmation of the governess’ thoughts.

It is no surprise that we have heard this story and that many have been wondering if the next President or one of his top aides would use it to tell their own story. What is surprising is how the story is told, and that it is so simple, so predictable. In this way they are able to be considered as a single person’s account. Yet many, many more individuals like Dr. Hoover have written about this and about the world around them. In this way, they are able to give a personal account of how politicians, their public figures and organizations shaped and maintained social order in the United States. They are able to portray the very nature of politics in simple, consistent words (i.e., the story.) They become part of the reality, making the story meaningful, even simple, and unique.

At the beginning of this book we are introduced to the first article of fiction in which the government was controlled by a young, highly educated, highly competent man whose only interest in America lay in obtaining a higher education. He was the author of the Constitution, which would have created the United States of America. The Founding Fathers believed “one of the great blessings of our Nation is to have a free government that is truly free from the influence of foreign and domestic interests.” They were right, of course, although not as much so as the “real” Founders that came after them were. But the true Founders would have been very different. It is interesting to note the fact that both Presidents Franklin Delano Roosevelt and Thomas Jefferson were born in the same state and both lived in the same town. Mr. Lincoln served faithfully in that state while both Presidents Benjamin Franklin Roosevelt and President Washington were born in the same state.
