Throughout the book, we see Christopher wanting independence. He gains confidence of himself and to help himself along his journey. Christopher has a hard time going places by himself. When he feels scared, he likes he hear white noise, blocking out the world around him curling up in a ball. In the book, we also see Christopher wanting independence because of a dream he had of being one of the few people left on Earth. He plans to leave for college too, also shows wanting independence. Christopher struggles to become independent because of him autism but this helps him to become self confident.

Christopher gained self confidence through figuring out Wellingtons mystery. Christopher had to speak with a number of people he did not know. For example, Christopher talking to Mrs. Alexander and figuring out that Mother had an affair with Mr. Shears. He finds this very uncomfortable but it gives him self confidence to solve problems on his own. Christopher has many obstacles. Christopher had to have the courage to approach the neighbors even though he was scared to talk to “strangers”. He knew his father forbid him not to ask the neighbors questions. He was willing to disobey his father to solve the murder of Wellington.
