As soon as the killings began to occur, I would have sent troops to help the people of Rwanda as soon as the attacks had begun. 800,000 men, women, and children died in the Rwandan genocide. At the same time, thousands of Hutu were murdered because they opposed the killing campaign and the forces directing it. Although the Rwandans are fully responsible for the organization and execution of the genocide, governments from around the world, including the US all share a little bit of guilt for the crime because they failed to prevent and stop the killing.
- When the people of Rwanda were given the right to make their own decision on their own futures, it made little difference whether the Hutu, who were then the backbone of the Hutu state, chose to live or die on the other side. They were made to choose, because they refused to be driven by any social control or political agenda from in Rwanda. No Hutu leadership wanted to be treated as weaklings, as being weak in their own home and nation or as a threat to others. Instead, they were given the opportunity to choose their own course. All Hutu of all ages, races, and religions can be members of a ruling group and will not be forced to accept, submit, or choose to leave their land. Only some will be sent back to the Hutu for their decisions to be taken by the ruling party and they will not be able to return home. To be accepted, we want to be a part of the future of a people.
- We are going to have to work hard to get rid of a majority of Hutu in Rwanda on our terms of power, but we can end the genocide with a new government as will most Hutu, who have long supported Rwanda, the people of Rwanda.
- As we look now to change the legacy of the Rwandan Genocide, how we will try to get rid of those who were guilty of genocide by force and violence, should that make sense, it would be better if Rwanda were given the vote and have it implemented without violence.
- I believe that the Rwandan government is not to blame. The leadership of the United States and other Western governments should have done more to take steps to improve the situation in Rwanda. Rwanda is not the only country where international law has not been applied. There were many cases of people in Rwanda committing suicide between the beginning of the genocide and the end. They died to gain access to international justice. Many other people were killed trying to escape persecution in the West. Yet, this country has not yet been fully integrated into the international community to the point where its people have been isolated from the rest of the world and subjected to the violence which we are all living with.
- The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights and the International Criminal Court (ICC) now decide where and how they want to act in Rwanda. The question is whether they should be included within that process that will not harm Rwanda and its people.[/li]
- In light of the current situation in the Horn of Africa, I do not expect Rwanda to continue to live the way it is now and, in this case, to take aggressive policies toward Africa, which are necessary to prevent the growth and spread of genocide elsewhere in the world.”
