RE: Expanding the Youth Restorative Action ProjectThe Youth Restorative Action Project is an excellent source for youth that find themselves in the criminal justice system. It allows for more meaningful action to be taken then just putting these youth in prison. This program has touched countless lives within the Edmonton area since its formation in 2001. The proposal I have, is that this program be expanded to other communities in Alberta. The expansion would be planned to start in 2016 to 2017, which gives plenty of time to canvass the prospective communities and find people who are just as passionate about youth restorative justice. This expansion should be considered because there are youth in every city in Alberta who would meet the qualifications to be apart of this program. In 2010 almost 153, 000 youth were accused of committing a crime, 42 percent were charged while 58 percent were dealt with in other means. If this program was in more communities, more youth could be dealt with in other ways then the traditional laying of charges. Alberta could be a leader in a movement of restorative justice offered by youth for youth.Everyone could potentially benefit from the expansion of this project. Directly it will benefit any accused youth, the victims of their crimes and the community at large. The number of people who could be, potentially effected indirectly is vast. One of the most prominent institutions would be the correctional system since there would be less youth being placed in there facilities. This is a program that can empower the youth of Alberta and revolutionize the administration of restorative justice for youth. This program is,“mandated to work with young people who have caused harm while being affected by a variety of significant social issues such as intolerance, racism, substance abuse, homelessness, family violence and prostitution.”(YRAP, 2003). This proposal is to expand the Youth Restorative Justice Project into other Alberta communities. This expansion program should start in February 2015 and is estimated to be completed by 2022. Through this program Alberta will be able to support the youths within the court systems that are affected by underlying social issues. Youth recidivism should also be affected by this program in a positive way, by addressing the underlying issues these youth face there is a higher likelihood that they will not be within the court systems again. This program also offers each community to take an active role in helping the troubled youth within their own communities and even presents the victims an opportunity to play a meaningful role in the process.
