New QualityEssay Preview: New QualityReport this essayNew Quality ProcessOur textbook defines Quality function development as ” a structural approach for integrating the voice of the customer into both the product and service development process. (Stevenson, 2012)
In the article I chose, the author writes about Google Fiber. This is a service that is expected to eventually reach all major metropolitan regions of our country with extremely high speed Internet as well as vastly improved television service for similar prices to what we now pay for these services. Google has chosen Kansas City to be its pilot city for this new service. Google has responded to our cultures desire for greater bandwidth and more service options. They are laying fiber optic lines all through Kansas City and neighborhoods are being offered this incredible new service. This great example of quality function development is bringing a great deal of competition to existing Internet and television providers such as Time Warner, Verizon, and Comcast.
The FCC is also pleased to see that the City of Memphis is now going over what’s happening with Fiber. They are taking the idea a step further by bringing over the concept of a mobile Web browser to a municipal government setting.
That would make it possible to use Mobile Fiber as a universal service. The service is called Mobile World for the local government. It will take effect in 2012 as planned. The basic idea of this service is to provide Internet access to all citizens from across the Mississippi River to Memphis. It will connect citizens to public utilities through an underground interconnection. The City does not have a state-of-the-art network as there is already been no state-of-the-art broadband connection within the state.
The City is committed to providing this service. The FCC is excited about the growth of this new service. Their goal is to raise some $100 million.
In March of 2013 the FCC’s Communications Department stated that the following proposals would be considered in the proposal review process and then the City of Memphis may enter into a agreement with Google Fiber. The article describes one family that was offered, for about the same price as their existing service, Internet speeds that are 50 times faster than their current high speed Internet service with Time Warner. This drastic change in service is a welcomed improvement for consumers. While it is going well for consumers, it is proving to be quite an obstacle for the other Internet and television providers. For example, people have mentioned that Time Warner was cutting their monthly bills and increasing their level of service in order to lock people into contracts and maintain customers despite the looming competition from Google.
