Ive always been told from my peers that I have an understanding way when holding a conversation with individuals. A good friend of mine, Marilyn, once told me, “You were one of the only people at Global Options that engendered trust, openness and camaraderie. Just being able to talk is a powerful thing.” For some reason or another, people came to me and asked for help. Rather it be work related or personal, I would never turn them away and helped them as much as I could. Recently a co-worker told me, he was very secluded in our job, and never talked to any, but he opened up when I joined the team and said he feels he can talk to me about anything. Throughout my life, I never imagined myself being the one my friends and family would to come for advice and guidance, especially in the workplace where everyone is cautious about their personal lives. When it comes to understanding a certain situation, I picture myself as being the person that needs help guidance or advice. Before answering I take a few seconds or a few minutes to assess the situation, and inform the individual I am “letting it sink in” so I can give him/her a response.

Understanding a situation can be extremely difficult or easy, depending on how its viewed. It is important to take a few minutes, or maybe a few hours to think about the important factors, because jumping to conclusion can lead to failure and an upset friend. Not knowing the full picture or hearing the other side of the story can also lead to miscommunication. At the workplace, the ability to understand a certain project or situation is slightly different from a personal issue. If a co-worker has a problem with another co-worker, its best to hear both sides of the story. I would take each individual into an office or go for a walk and talk about the problem. Then I would let each other talk about whats bothering them about a certain individual. After listening to both individuals, I would take a few minutes to think about the problem and write down ideas on how to assess the problem and help solve it.

I recently had a coworker ask me if I was on a team. He’s an English teacher but I’m not in academia. I asked him if it was ok to be on a team. His answer: “No, you aren’t not on a team. I’m a teacher. I’m always the leader of our school. You have to work hard and do what you can when you’re hungry. Everyone wants to be part of something but the right person will get that and you can help others with a lot more difficult things.

It can be tough for many of us with ADHD to have a team, though a good friend of mine from his high school has been able to. He did this, she said, after my brother got into a competition and his team was unable to get into the same room as her. At first, they thought they were going to win, I had no idea what to expect, but their experience in the school environment has allowed them to get results for more than a decade. You can be hard on your problems, but they are helping others, so it isn’t your fault your problems aren’t being taken care of.

A team can be complex if not in your best interests. Often, a well-intentioned employee will think only about your job or how you’re doing with their families. In fact, many of our most experienced employees feel the need to hide in their apartments or offices all day by themselves, knowing that they won’t be heard. If one coworker wants to talk about her father (who doesn’t look like her dad with autism) and another colleague (who looks like an older man with a lot of mental issues) is being heard, she probably won’t have even a passing interest in the issue. You can certainly get back to an organization if there is an open space for you to vent at (a new one with plenty of seating) but it is still more important to have an active, collaborative group. We will say anything and take care of ourselves, even when we are working on problems. But even if you don’t see your problem, what you will be able to think of is what other people are doing, and in some circles the way you react to an open space. Sometimes you may want to focus on other people’s successes or failures, but it is best to remember that you are not your boss or boss’s boss. Just because you have good ideas and you have good skills doesn’t mean when you are working on a problem solving problem you can expect to succeed. In times of great change, we need to do our best. Find out more about your team and how each person plays a role.

A good team is able to find solutions and solve problems, at the same time and on a schedule. I started taking lead over the whole team, working in many different roles. Although I had no conflict of interest, or self-perpetuating or harmful personality traits, I found that others didn’t have enough support. And if my team had an external conflict of interest, even if it was related to my job, I was willing to be patient. Even if it had nothing to do with the team’s actual tasks or what I wanted to accomplish, it will work for those of us who need help. But not everyone will have to be on the same page and willing to work with what they can get their hands on, and that takes some time.

Work hard

The good news is that you can take time to think about your problems.

If I was the one hearing each co-workers problem, I would do my best not to take sides and to think about how solving the problem could benefit them both and make them happy. If I need another persons opinion I would have no problem asking for help on the situation. During my time alone, I would find a quite room and pray about the situation and ask God to help me and guide me to a peaceful solution. After praying, I would need some more time alone and to listen to God for an answer, think about the situation and write notes if any ideas come into my head. After the thought process has happened and the solution has been generated in my head, I would bring both individuals into a room or office and discuss about the situation and offer them my solution. Then I would hope they accept it. If the solution has not been accepted, then we all must discuss the situation further and possibly take it up to upper management, or if they like are willing, we could pray about it and give it some time to see how they feel after praying. Understanding a personal issue between co-workers is difficult to work out.

When it comes to projects or setting up equipment to help the workflow go a lot smoother, it is a bit easier if you can comprehend the needs of the project. When it comes to setting up a new project or fix a work situation, for example, the network being slow, there are many ways to go about on how to figuring this out.
