What was the problem?Wixom plant was better than 46 other assembly plants spread across the country in terms of well lighting and cleanliness. It boasted adequate rest rooms, an air conditioned cafeteria and plenty of drinking foundations. But still the working conditions were far from ideal. Below are some of the other reasons.A lot of people who brought Ford cars complained about poor workmanship. Almost 500 cars were present at their plant for repairing. Also people like the author who had no knowledge of assembling cars and who had come in as a temporary worker just to get a feel of how workers actually work in an assembly plant made a lot of mistakes which many of the times used to go unnoticed. The inspectorates were very casual in their approach of checking cars. It’s only when someone pointed out the problem that they used to either take action or just left it go away with. Also the pace of production was very slow which led to many local strikes in the plant. The lunch periods were staggered. There were very little time allotted for lunch. Also the two breaks they used to get during their working hours were not included in their working hours. Their wages were also very low. So a lot of people used to work at other different places for earning money after their work at the plant got over.
