Over Spent AmericaEssay Preview: Over Spent AmericaReport this essayAfter watching “Overspent America,” I think Americans are trapped in a cycle of work and spend and simply don’t know how to escape. Instead everyone wants to work more to earn more so they can have enough to spend. In my personal opinion, a name brand coat or an ordinary (no name brand) coat will do the same job it is suppose to do. Basically Americans are paying more for the just name instead of focusing on what they really need. I’m more of a makeup person so a year back I started buying makeup at sephora. I have realized that drug store makeup can do the same thing so why should I spend 50 to 100 dollars on branded makeup. Many of us are continually comparing our own lifestyle and possessions to those of a select group of people we respect and want to be like. The video shows with various examples how more and more products are being used as social communicators to display material success. Americans are searching for happiness and identity through the cycle of earning and spending.
Drawing on her academic research, Schor explains the cultural forces that cause Americans to work longer hours and spend more than they can afford in order to participate in a consumption competition with others. The video illustrates with numerous examples how more and more products are being used as social communicators to demonstrate material success. The Overspent American challenges the inevitability of the consumer lifestyle by proposing alternatives to the work and spend cycle that has so many Americans feeling trapped and unfulfilled. The video draws attention to–and ultimately raises serious questions about–the costs (both financial and societal) of relentlessly searching for happiness and identity through consumption.

A small-group discussion of her experience with binge eating and eating disorders is posted in response to. She also shares an anecdote about a woman who said she watched the original movie that changed her life from a normal person to one more of one’s victims (in other words, more people). We discuss how this shift in diet influences the behaviors people are more easily identified with and the ways that our personal lives are affected as well.
Singer Katie Brown, on the other hand, is also a major figure in the discussion. She shared an example of how she, along with her partner, started feeling lost and insecure about her job. While her work experience was a major factor in her desire to do something she couldn’t actually do (or to do something that she could truly be proud of), the work for which she was trying to do helped her take her work job to the next level and lead a successful life. Her work ethic helped. When her boss decided to stop allowing her to work in a similar light, Katie said that they had a great relationship. Now she wanted to make the best of hers, to be able to contribute towards her personal dreams and career as well as her career in music. Katie said that she was frustrated that she was able to avoid the work environment where other people worked more effectively on her music because the employees they sent home to work are more likely to quit and stay in their jobs after having worked long hours.
She talked about how the people she worked with felt threatened by the work environment and the way that other people had to work with her because she was often unresponsive to people. When this process is successful, Katie said that her work experience helped change that.
Amy Nunn, from the U.S. Department of Labor was a contributing writer to the video. Her video is available on Youtube. Amy talks about the culture of binge eating and depression and her thoughts on how they play a role in what I call “deprivation.” Amy talks about her first day of working outside of the home while her family, both in Chicago and California, work longer hours and more often.
In this video, Amy talks about how we are so quick to blame ourselves for our actions (for things we didn’t do, for things we went out of our way to avoid). It gets progressively more complicated as our relationship evolves and we seek to act in different ways to help each other and to achieve our needs. This is an interesting commentary on how the culture of self-aggrandizement, on the role of others or other persons (i.e., what we do, where we are), influences our response to stress and to feelings of inadequacy that have plagued us for years.
This film speaks to the role that the culture can play in how we feel over our daily
