The Benefits of Safe Injection FacilitiesThe Benefits of Safe Injection FacilitiesHarm reduction is a philosophy which revolves around programs and policies that are aimed to reduce the harm done in various moral practices. Harm reduction can specifically be applied to drug use. The first safe injection facility in North America was opened in Vancouver, on September 12, 2003 (MacPhee 5). The Vancouver safe injection facility is called Insite, and is located in the city’s Eastside, which is notorious for crime, poverty, and drug use. Insite was extremely controversial, considering these clinics allow the use of illegal substances. Safe injection facilities do not supply drugs to users, users only bring in their own street-drugs. Despite the controversy, the results of Insite have been exceptionally positive in many aspects. Safe injection facilities are beneficial, not only for drug users but for society as a whole.

The Safety Standards of Safe Injection Facilities will include:
The specific requirements for the facility will vary by the jurisdiction, location, and type of facility. There are a number of criteria for the facility:
The facility will be equipped with the necessary tools to comply with all applicable safety standards, including a minimum of four minutes of work or less per session, maximum use of energy, and an appropriate temperature.
Each of the safety inspection tests, as well as the safety clearance tests, are conducted under the supervision of an independent third party responsible for maintaining the integrity of the facility, as required. Both the Canadian Health Inspection Service (CHIS) and the RCMP are engaged in a comprehensive team of team members to ensure compliance with the requirements.
The facility’s unique facility inspection and assessment process includes a team of inspectors who, when asked, provide accurate and objective identification of the person or substance that was used in the facility and the amount of substance for which use may be authorized. The first inspection must be conducted on a physical basis and must identify the individual in question. This identifies those responsible for issuing the required inspection, placing a safety clearance and verification order in an appropriate area to ensure compliance with a specific safety measure, and has been done successfully in other Canadian facilities on and offsite.
The number of visits to the safe injection facilities are estimated to be in the millions. A positive one-week test result was obtained in the case of the Vancouver safe injection facility on December 26, 2010, and at the Vancouver office of Insite in 2015 (MacPhee 5). The health ministry received a positive one-week test result on July 27, 2015 (MacPhee 5). Insite has had six facilities located in the U.S., one in California, and four in Canada since its opening, which are available globally in 2014 and are scheduled to open at the end of the second quarter of 2018.

The safe injection facilities are in the best shape of any of Canada’s most notorious drug and alcohol-related facilities, with a minimum of five visits to each facility per year. The facility utilizes a single electronic surveillance system and an efficient facility management system. The facility is also equipped with three air-conditioned offices within the building (no one needs a separate airlock here), with a comprehensive online program for new residents to access safety-related services. Many of those who do visit the facilities may need to bring their own disposable household items and household items that can easily be packed inside a safe injection locker. The location also provides secure and spacious spaces for visitors with limited space to move and to sit comfortably and in good health.

Insite is important because it saves lives of drug users. Not a single death has occurred at Insite due to the trained medical staff in the building, despite over 500 accidental overdoses. (MacPhee 6). Saving lives is simply the humanitarian thing to do. All human beings, regardless of drug addictions and the related stigmas, deserve a chance for a better life. There is no reason for premature death due to unnecessary health complications from unsanitary drug use. More importantly, no non-users of intravenous drug usage have begun using such drugs at Insite, despite original fear over Insite encouraging drug use (MacPhee 6).
Safe injection facilities benefit society through stopping the spread of disease. Unsanitary drug injection is the reason for one third of all cumulative AIDS/HIV cases in the United States of America (Beletsky). Other diseases including most forms of hepatitis can also be acquired through the sharing of dirty needles. If drug-users acquire diseases such as hepatitis or HIV/AIDS through needle sharing, they can also pass these diseases on through non-protected sex (Pulsifer). There are various other programs that some clinics use, and all should implement into their methods. Methods on the rise include needle exchange programs, and education
