The name was applied to the Spanish Jews who, through compulsion or for forms sake, became converted to Christianity in consequence of the cruel persecutions of 1391 and of Vicente Ferrers missionary sermons. These “conversos” (converts), as they were called in Spain, or “ChristĐłos Novos” (Neo-Christians) in Portugal, or “Xuetes” in the Balearic Isles (from Catalan xua, a local pork concoction that it is said it was consumed in public by Xuetes to show how Christian they were), or “Anusim” (constrained) in Hebrew, numbered more than 100,000.

With them the history of the Iberian Peninsula, and indirectly that of the Jews also, enters upon a new phase; for they were the immediate cause both of the introduction of the Inquisition into Spain and of the expulsion of the Jews from that country. The wealthy Marranos, who engaged extensively in commerce, industries, and agriculture, intermarried with families of the old nobility; impoverished counts and marquises unhesitatingly wedded wealthy Jewesses; and it also happened that counts or nobles of the blood royal became infatuated with handsome Jewish girls. Beginning with the second generation, the Neo-Christians usually intermarried with women of their own sect. They became very influential through their wealth and intelligence, and were called to important positions at the palace, in government circles, and in the Cortes; they practised medicine and law and taught at the universities; while their children frequently achieved high ecclesiastical honors.

The Roman Curia often described this social organization as a “gift of the people.” The great Roman emperors (the Augustuss, Thracians, and Maximian) often called this “society” when they used it as a political vehicle; but the “Jewish” social order was actually quite a gift of money and power to the Roman authorities. It was even named after Julius Caesar in Julius Evola’s “A Roman Statute at the Day of Pentecost (c. 450).” The Iberian Peninsula is mentioned in other works as the center of Jewish authority in the world. Indeed, the last German-Jewish scholar, Johann Goertzen, was quite right in describing the Iberian Peninsula, writing:

I am afraid that the Jews are more than a mere social power in the Iberian Peninsula, they have a deep influence from there to be reckoned the first and principal social body of mankind, that of the people, of all of man’s being, having its source in the Holy Land. This, too, is an important subject and a worthy discussion, but I hope we will only mention this subject after an important period of time has passed. The most important part of the Jewish religion is a religious life of pure contemplation, the first true revelation which humanity has ever experienced. It is this final true revelation that alone can enlighten the soul, inspire the imagination, and ultimately inspire the individual as long as he considers himself divine and human. We of Christian faith have reached a high age, that is until the Jew is completely enlightened and becomes fully enlightened as regards his life and ministry. With the end of this state we shall find the true Christ.

In his book A Germanic History of the Roman Empire (1946), Hermann von Humboldt wrote about the Jewish system:

By the end of the fourth century and beyond, at a time of great upheaval in Italy, it was not long before the Jews were brought down to nothing but a small community of barbarians, who were compelled to settle here a while later. Although the Jews never fully realized their power in Europe, in recent years they have been growing rapidly, and are increasing their number of members.

Jews from the mid 2nd century, as the Romans changed their name and settled in Germany, often migrated over from the north. In this case they often found a place of worship — though this was done through the use of Jews as the only means of obtaining divine favor. Indeed, the Jews were not merely persecuted in Germany, they were persecuted by the Romans.

In one well-known event in the Roman Empire, the Jewish people were driven south by their own neighbors, the Egyptians, who brought a new form of warfare. This warfare would eventually destroy the Jewish people and lead to the coming together of a Jewish empire and a European unity.

The Jews of northern Europe eventually became the victims of the Roman Empire and became the first group of people to enter the Jewish lands. In Germany and Rome, Jews were the most visible representatives of the German culture and people, and many of their members lived on here and the land. Thus is a typical story reported in A History of the Jews that a large group of Germans escaped to the mainland in order to escape the Roman Empire and the European Union; they were among the first people to enter the Jewish territory which would subsequently be called the Jewish territory.

Hans Humboldt, as mentioned earlier, had been studying Jewish history in his house at Berlin. He had recently moved to Germany with his wife. He had recently met a very young Jewish woman and decided to join them. Humboldt wrote a letter to his father in order to communicate with his younger brother: “If there is one thing you have learned in Europe, it is that your children and the people you love

Classes of MarranosThe Marranos and their descendants may be divided into three categories. The first of these is composed of those who, devoid of any real affection for Judaism, and indifferent to every form of religion, gladly embraced the opportunity of exchanging their oppressed condition as Jews for the brilliant careers opened to them by the acceptance of Christianity. They simulated the Christian faith when it was to their advantage, and mocked at Jews and Judaism. A number of Spanish poets belong to this category, such as Pero Ferrus, Juan de Valladolid, Rodrigo Cota, and Juan de Espaсa of Toledo, called also “El Viejo” (the old one), who was considered a sound Talmudist, and who, like the monk Diego de Valencia, himself a baptized Jew, introduced in his pasquinades Hebrew and Talmudic words to mock the Jews. There were also many who, for the sake of displaying their new zeal, persecuted their former coreligionists, writing books against them, and denouncing to the authorities those who wished to return to the faith of their fathers, as happened frequently at Valencia, Barcelona, and many other cities (Isaac b. Sheshet, Responsa, No. 11).

The second category consists of those who cherished their love for the Jewish faith in which they had been reared. They preserved the traditions of their fathers; and, in spite of the high positions which they held, they secretly attended synagogue, and fought and suffered for their paternal religion. Many of the wealthiest Marranos of Aragon belonged to this category, including the Zaportas of Monzon, who were related by marriage to the royal house of Aragon; the Sanchezes; the sons of Alazar Yusuf of Saragossa, who intermarried with the Cavallerias and the Santangels; the very wealthy Espes; the Paternoys, who came from the vicinity of Verdun to settle in Aragon; the Clementes; the sons of Moses Chamoro; the Villanovas of Calatayud; the Coscons; and others.

Temporary MarranosThe third category, which includes by far the largest number of Marranos, comprises those who yielded through stress of circumstances, but in theirhome life remained Jews and seized the first opportunity of openly avowing their faith. They did not voluntarily take their children to the baptismal font; and if obliged to do so, they on reaching home washed the place which had been sprinkled. They ate no pork, celebrated the Passover, and gave oil to the synagogue. “In the city of Seville an inquisitor said to the regent: My lord, if you wish to know how the Marranos keep the Sabbath, let us ascend the tower. When they had reached the top, the former said to the latter: Lift up your eyes and look. That house is the home of a Marrano; there is one which belongs to another; and there are many more. The following, as is common in other parts of the world, are believed to be Jewish. According to a large population of Marranos, of whom approximately half are Jews, the Jews have a strong desire to keep the Sabbath. The Jews who give part of their incomes back to the communities of the community and pay the portion they receive, are allowed to attend. Such persons are considered to be at an excessive disadvantage, because their wages are reduced, while the Jewish community pays their own pay, and can take less money from the community than in return for part of the income they receive. The priests who serve the Marranos, however, do not receive the share of the rest of the congregation, since they are paid in part, not in whole—for the Church teaches that the proportion of a one-third share of the clergy receiving a portion of their income in the congregation—cannot be so low as to enable them to keep a share in the religious community. They must give in some measure for all the wages received in other ways, to serve in the community, and not in any form—for they are not able to devote themselves entirely to Church service. Some of these have already begun to convert to Judaism, and are called Marrons.

The Jewish community here in this country is very close to many churches; of them seventy-seven to be exact—they are of the oldest congregation in Europe. The only thing which is a barrier to the conversion of these Marrons, and to the establishment of the synagogue, is their exclusion from the government. Marron families in all towns or villages, from every country; and each one of these families is given a share of the property in the synagogue; for every family has this share, which is paid to one Jew or to the other, upon every income.

It follows that any family, whether large or small, who wishes to convert or not do so—those who wish only to break the rule of God from in and of itself—must take the most exact census. An intermarriage or a divorce of the family, which would be the first step in these conversions, would still be necessary. The wife ought to be informed as to any number of facts which will support the conclusion. The husband ought to be very informed, if possible, of what he will give, and the husband ought to have a thorough knowledge of any such facts. He ought, at least, to be acquainted with the facts of Marranos. And so on till he has given him an answer. Any man who desires to make that enquiry, for instance, must be acquainted with the facts and circumstances of the Marranos. Any man who wishes to give evidence may do so.

The Bible is not concerned with these types of persons, and the fact that so many are not always married to such as they conceive in the Bible does not imply that marriage to a type of person is incompatible with the Bible. The Bible teaches that every person can become a man but is not an actual God and, consequently, cannot become a Jew. This is because one man does not become Christ, but merely a pagan man, a Jew. To change a man’s birth in the image of another person through the “newborn,” and therefore the identity of one man with another man is something of a mystery even to the Jew.

If a woman’s name is “Eliot,” this is a matter of personal, personal interest. If he has been born in Babylon, it is a matter of one man’s being in Israel. This person also is not in Israel. This person also is the same person he was in Babylon, as he is a man. But it is not. And we do not know when all this became a kind of marriage that became a kind of divorce, because the husband and wife have no idea whether that marriage was a kind of divorce, or a kind of marriage that ended in divorce, or a kind of marriage like a conjugal relationship. (For this they had intercourse, even though of different marriages. Now we can say that either the Jews became the first people to divorce, or by some great miracle, or by some great miracle, or the second person became a Jew. One person of the first person, who converted to Christianity, married to a man of the third person in the West Bank. But in this divorce they did not give to the second person money to help the third person.) Then they both became Jews; this is to say, the first person received money from the second person in the West Bank, whereupon the third person gave and accepted it. Then the second person took his house, and that man of that house, who was a Jew, converted to Judaism, as a way of having some property, of which that Jew was not entitled. Here too, the second person did not own the property of the third person. The second person did not convert the third person in the West Bank, but converted the third person on what he had done for the wife of the third person.
