The Good Earth SummaryChapter 10 After selling their table, benches, and beds, Wang Lung and his family started their journey to the South. As they headed out of the town, Wang Lung walked past the temple and turned down the gods that failed to help the village. The family further traveled to the town and met a group of starving men in front of the Hwang resident. They cursed about how heartless the rich were when they refused to help the poor, even though they had excessive amount of rice left. Later, Wang Lung heard about the firewagon or the train and took it to reach the South faster.Chapter 11 Wang Lung bought some bread and rice for the family once they were on the train with the remaining cash. During the ride, he learnt some tips of living in the South from some men. They suggested he should beg for survival, but Wang Lung preferred working as he considered begging was an inappropriate act. They reached their destination and found the refugee area, and O-lan built their shelter from mats. Later, they went to the public kitchen and ate the food that was donated by the rich. O-lan and the two boys started to beg for living, and Wang Lung found a job as a ricksha puller. At first, Wang Lung was deceived by his customer, but with some experiences, he started to learn how to set the price and get rid of exploitation. Unfortunately, with all the hard work they had done, the family could earn only little amount of money for their survival. Chapter 12 Wang Lung and his family tried to blend into the city life. However, Wang Lung still felt very foreign in this city: “He lived in the rich city as alien as a rat in a rich mans house that is fed on scraps thrown away, and hides here and there and is never a part of the real life of the house”. Soon his two sons became thieves. The younger son stole meat from the butcher, and Wang Lung was very angry at the idea of stealing. He tries to throw the meat away, but O-lan thought differently. Wang Lung refused to eat the meat, and at that one night, he beat his son for stealing and longed for returning home where everything was at peace.
