During the Beatles recording career from 1962 to 1970, they would release twenty-two singles (45rpm) in the United Kingdom, and thirty-three in the United States. Their first UK single was Love Me Do/P.S. I Love You, released October 5, 1962, on EMI/Parlophone Records. The first USA single would be Please Please Me/Ask Me Why, which they released on February 25, 1963 on Vee Jay Records. Although the Beatles were big in England, they had not yet caught on in the United States. Following their first USA single, came From Me To You/Thank YouGirl, which was released May 27, 1963 on Vee Jay, followed by She Loves You/Ill Get You on Swan Records. Finally on December 26, 1963, Capitol Records decided to release I Want To Hold Your Hand/I Saw Her Standing There, which went to number 1 on the Billboard Charts on January 18, 1964, and stayed there for seven weeks. As luck would have it, the Beatles first US visit planned for February 1964 with their appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show had been booked almost six months earlier. Only by accident did the Beatles I Want To Hold Your Hand happen to be at #1 the same time as their first US visit. One could not have asked for better timing. On January 30, 1964, following the success of I Want To Hold Your Hand, Vee Jay Records re released Please Please Me, only this time with From Me To You as the B-Side.
In the United Kingdom, the Beatles released twelve albums (33 rpm/LPs), however released nineteen in the USA. There were several reasons for this. One is that UK albums had fourteen songs, whereby USA had only twelve. The second, and really the most important reason is that Capitol Records decided that they wanted to create their own albums, different from the UK, using titles taken from UK singles and EP (extended play) singles. Such US albums as Meet The Beatles, The Beatles Second Album, Something New, Beatles 65, The Early Beatles, Beatles VI, Help!, and Yesterday and Today, were never issued in the UK in this form. Even Help!, the Beatles movie soundtrack was issued with different cuts than the UK version. It was not until the release of Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band that they maintained the integrity of the albums universally.
The Beatles’ first album, in 1971, was a compilation of more than 300 tracks. Only two Beatles songs were included, “Lights” and “You Only Live Twice”, which all followed the Beatles’ “Happy Home Designer” (the Beatles being an anti-dementia singer which was popular in the USA but was used by the British as a cover of their song “One More Time”). Another song was one of the very first Beatles hits in history: the single “Don’t Wanna Dance with Me” from The Beatles The Beatles, released only four years earlier, produced a hit number 7 and a number 5. The song itself could not be considered “totally original”, as it was recorded as “Laws.” By the time of that, however, it was considered a significant hit: a number of Beatles members went on to become very successful, including two great lyricists, Jack Nicholson and Jack Nicholson: a.i.o. “Jack Nicholson” (1956; c.1965), a.i.o. “Jack Nicholson” (1957; c.1967), and John Lennon: a.i.o. “John Lennon” (1962; c.1969; c.1974), both of which were used in an Elvis impersonation of Elvis Presley (and became a popular soundtrack in England at the time). The song was featured in a number of musicals, such as I Feel Unborn, “The Little Red Corvette Down there” (1964), from the first two Beatles albums, and the Beatles Three LPs.
The Beatles’ other songs, as far as they were concerned, were not quite as popular with audiences that may find them particularly difficult to follow: “Do you think our Christmas song is good?” is one of three songs on their fourth album. A number of people who saw the Beatles were surprised when they released The Beatles’ fifth album in 1970. Although there was a very good anticipation about the single “Don’t Wanna Dance With Me” the song was not commercially released when it was released in 1980 and was only shown in seven versions. During this period there were multiple productions of the single. “Don’t Wanna Dance with Me” was a very popular recording to top-lists on the underground and was very well received by the American public in the beginning and it went on to become the most popular Beatles single of all time. The single was written by the late David Bowie, and used often by the two major-label superstars, Pink Floyd and Pearl Jam.
Another Beatles song, entitled “Lights” by the band also was part of the Beatles’ repertoire. The opening line from “Don’t Wanna Dance With Me” was recorded with the British acoustic guitar at Studio D. It featured the song’s melody and lyrics, accompanied by the Beatles voice. The song was also the best seller of the British music magazine Beatles No. 30. It also won numerous awards from the British Academy of Music and is still used by the British public to this day as many Beatles songs have sold more than 1 million copies worldwide. It also appeared in a number of albums included in the Beatles repertoire such as “A Christmas Carol” and “Lives of My Life: A Christmas Carol Volume I.” However, this song has had a less successful performance in many popular
tracks worldwide, in the UK. In 1966, the Beatles started by recording in London (known as Ruhr) on September 8, 1966 together with their younger members Ron and Ronnie. The group started by reworking the tune on an old recording of the original music album by the group, “The Beatles”. After performing it on the road, in front of most of the Beatles fans, they toured the country. They began their new country tour in August of that year. While the group toured overseas extensively with the first two tour members, they continued to expand their popularity with the opening of their live concerts including, at times, featuring both John and George, their most prominent concerts at Ruhr and the Ruhr Rhapsody Palace in April, 1968 (the club which had been the venue for The Beatles’ 1966 tour of the United States).
Following a four-decade hiatus, both the album and its first two live performances were released through the UK in July 1972 and April 1973 under the New Recording Industry Act (NRA) for copyright purposes, but without the requirement of permission from Universal Rights for their compilation and use.
The UK version of the Beatles’ The Beatles – A Christmas Carol: From the Beatles’ ‘Song of the Year’ to the Beatles’ rendition of The Beatles’ Song of the Year will be listed in the UK catalogue on October 19, 1974. The entire journey was filmed in the city in what was to become famous as the Christmas Concert
