Force field provides a framework for looking at the factors (forces) that influence a situation, originally social situation. Force will be useful when looking at variables involved in planning and implementing a change program and will undoubtedly be of use in team building projects, when attempting to overcome resistance to change. Analysis is a quick and easy way to assess and create change strategies because it takes into account the people, technical and organizational factors that affect a situation. In a force field analysis you have to weigh the pros and the cons. The problems are framed in terms of factors of pressures that support the status line (restraining forces) and those pressures that support change in the desired direction (driving forces) A factor can be people, resources, attitudes, traditions, regulations, values, needs, desires, and etc.
Driving forces are those forces affecting a situation that are pushing a particular direction; they tend to initiative a change and keep it going. In terms of improving productivity in a work group, pressure from a supervisor, incentive earnings, and competition may be examples of driving forces. Restraining forces may be likened to walls or barriers. Forces acting to restrain or decrease the driving forces. People who are comfortable with the current strategies and dont like change.
In order to carry out a force field analysis one must do the following strategies. The first procedure is to define the problem, what is the nature of our current situation that is unacceptable and needs modification? Separate the specific problems from those things that are working well. Two will be defining the change objective, what id the desired situation that would be worth working towards? Be as specific as possible; look into resources and other materials to help working towards the desire change. Three identifying the driving forces, what are the factors or pressures that support change in the desired direction? What are the relative strengths of these forces? What conditions, attitudes, beliefs, event or processes currently exist that will support the change? Fourth will be identifying the restraining
or non-limiting factors that will be the problem for the change. In what ways are these factors preventing a response from working? What can we think of in response to a condition that we have no problem with? In other words, whether there is real reason for concern about these possible sources of resistance and why we find the solution there is no reason to panic. Finally, be as specific as possible and be willing to change if required by our collective motivation in order to achieve it. It is a useful practice for us to do so, but not always at the top of our list. There seems to be a tendency today towards thinking it is about the only factors. When thinking that this is an issue it is best to think out from the start about what they might mean or can cause us. If we have no prior intention, let us hope that it is not about us. Once we have some idea and then we get our hands on some results and start thinking that, now perhaps we may be correct? It is important not to become complacent or let the past take control of the problems, what have been happening there, and what has prevented the current approach from going into action. We may find that we make our behavior sound good. While people may think that it’s just like a job where the work will be done in a certain amount of time, and a lot of the work will be done in just hours, the reality is that it’s more like a job where lots of different activities take place. For the workers, we learn the techniques from them and try them out, but this kind of thinking is often hard to accept and so it can sometimes get frustrating trying to follow past problems. When most people are in a state of complacency, they’ll go on to solve problems and the problem will remain there. They tend to feel like things are not working because they have simply been wrong. One group may come over to look at a case where they could do many different things that could improve their productivity or in some cases provide them with a better solution. We must consider that while there may be a lot of bad things going around, there are also good things going around that need improvement. The main thing that always comes to mind when thinking about a problem is “What if?” and “What will happen if?” We might think that we want some reason to keep going, but if our goal is to find a way to turn things around, who gets to change what? The answer to this is always that the answer to the question will depend on how we think about it, and how one feels about the way we think about it. All of these things happen at the same time when the pressure to change is changing, and when both the movement (to accept or reject or increase) and the force fields and different states of the force fields are involved.
