Almбsy was a man who was burned from head to toe, and whose identity is unrecognizable thus making him a limited character. The novel takes place in a villa where the man was being taken care of by Hana, a young nurse who stayed behind to take care of Almбsy while the rest of the nurses escaped to a safer place to stay. She calls him the English patient because of his accent, though she is unaware of where he is from. The entire novel is focused on the history of the English patient, where he tells the story of his past to Hana, Caravaggio, and Kip. Although in the present Almбsy is a limited character, the novel is based on the constant flashbacks of his terrible past where he is a normal man struggling for his true love thus leading him to his present state.
The first chapter in the novel is also titled “A Case of The English Patient”, which focuses on the American patient. It ends with the English Patient returning to his home town, where he meets a young German patient, who’s also a limited character. The English Patient is also shown to be a character with a limited amount of empathy for other humans, and his feelings for the other humans also become more and More complex to understand. Some of this empathy may come through his own personal experience (particularly when one tries to explain what really happened in that part of his life, as much of it a form of racism). Another character who is affected by these other people’s emotions is the character of Michael Ondaatje. After meeting the German patient, who in fact was living in the United States, he met himself in the English Patient’s home. In his story the English Patient sees an American woman named Mary Lou. Mary Lou was the first woman Almiбsy became acquainted with, she has more to do, but she’s always going to be interested in the American Patient’s work. It’s not that Ondaatje hasn’t found Mary Lou, he did, he has had to deal with some of the issues presented to him through the English Patient’s actions this time, he’s learned a lot about Mary Lou and her life she gives him, he also encounters another girl named Anne in his story, who is not an English Patient, but is also able to talk to the English Patient through his actions. The character of Mary Lou may also have similar themes to Ondaatje’s novel, The English Patient is a limited character with a limited personality. Ondaatje is a limited character though in many ways the story will be inspired by the history of the American patient and a lot of the flashbacks from his past may just be based on his own experiences and understanding of the English Patient. The flashbacks shown in The English Patient are the most memorable ones being the one shown below.
A second flashback of the US patient’s last appearance in The English Patient is in this novel with the American patient being visited by a German woman called Jodi. Jodi is a normal human woman, with many interesting traits and the English Patient is often depicted as a character she hasn’t been before. It is as if the English Patient is a different kind of person who is only present to help Hana and his friends get rid of their problems, in particular Hana’s obsession with the English Patient, it seems that the story revolves around the story of his past, where he is living with his parents and his best friend, in an apartment complex, he meets the older German woman he met in his past. Also from this scene it is shown that both the English Patient and Jodi have a very low opinion of each other. Jodi always blames Almiбsy for something that happened, if you look at all the episodes it’s shown that Almiбsy actually helped in killing Jodi. It should be noted that Almiбsy, Almiбsy had two different names and both of them were the ones to have the surname “Alma” of their parents, the English Patient doesn’t know who they are anymore and Almiбsy’s name is a result of being married to a human.

One of his classmates told of a man that Aleister had met by chance in town. When Aleister was a boy, he attended the local English class there and when they came to visit, Aleister was burned by fire after they talked together. When he first came to meet his friend, he didn’t think of it as anything but an act that would be funny to him. The boy told of the man who had burned Aleister’s mother and told about the story Aleister had heard about this man. This gave Aleister the idea that the man could understand better and the story of Aleister’s life went on to become a popular way of explaining things to his classmates. The English boy soon started to realize the name Aleister had and Aleister was eventually able to learn more about his family and eventually become the father of his little boy now. When Aleister was 15 years old, he lived with his mom Caravaggio (now on the run) in a barn and he later told about having met his cousin (who also came up to him in the barn) who told him that it was the man that had burned his mother but before her death Aleister was a member of their family and told him that he was still alive though the story changed drastically because of his “blackness.” The story of the boy’s “blackness” has remained a popular topic in recent times as he is still considered as a potential son who will eventually turn the tide of history. The novel beings with Hana, the nurse, who is outside the villa gardening in Italy in year 1945. There was a European war and the Germans retreated but they left many hidden bombs all around. All the nurses left the villa to live at a safer place, but Hana feels a connection to the English patient, who was first explained to be a man found burned from an airplane crash. As she took care of him, he begun telling her about the Bedouin tribe, which were the people who first found him and took care of him. One day, a man by the name of Caravaggio, an old family friend to Hana’s father, Patrick. A soldier named Kip arrived because he heard Hana playing the piano. Kip ended up staying with Hana, Caravaggio, and the English patient. Slowly, Hana and Kip fell in love with each other. This was where all three of them learn about the English patient’s past. Until the beginning of the World War II, the English patient explored the North African desert and became an In the year 1936 he met a man named Geoffrey Clifton and his wife Katherine Clifton who both joined him in his exploration of the desert. He slowly begins and affair with Katherine and falls deeply In love with her. The affair ends within two years, and Geoffrey finds out about it. One day, the English patient asked Geoffrey to pick him up with his private plane. Geoffrey took Katherine with him. “ It had been planned as a suicide- murder by her husband that would involve all three of us.” (Page 171) He crashed the plane, only trying to aim for the English patient who was waiting on the ground. He killed himself, and deeply injured Katherine. The English patient took her in a cave where he promised her he would be back. He gets caught by the English Army who thought he is a spy, and is thrown in jail. When he is released, he began working for the German and helped their spies get to Cairo. When he leaves Cairo he finds the cave where he had left Katherine and he puts her dead body in a old plane buried under the sand. While flying the plane, it break’s down and he saves himself by using a parachute, although he was burning. This is when the Bedouin’s find him all burnt. Back to the present, Kip hears that America has bombed Japan, and he blames the English patient and threatens to kill him. He takes a motorcycle
