Bill GatesBill GatesBill Gates, Chairman/Co-Founder/Chief Software Architect, Microsoft CorporationWilliam Henry Gates III was born on October 28, 1955, to William H. Gates II, an attorney, and Mary Maxwell Gates, a schoolteacher. Gates and his two sisters, Kristianne and Libby, grew up in Seattle, Washington. His family called him “Trey”. His grandmother gave him his nickname because it is a card player’s term for three (Lowe 3). On January 1, 1994, Bill married Melinda French, a Product Manager/Marketing Executive at Microsoft. They have two children, Jennifer Katharine, born in 1996, and Rory John, born in 1999. Early on in life, it was apparent that he inherited the ambition, intelligence, and competitive spirit that had helped his progenitors rise to the top in their chosen professions. In elementary school he quickly surpassed all of his peer’s abilities in nearly all subjects, especially math and science. He read the World Book Encyclopedia from A to Z by the time he was nine years
and was asked to write, write, and edit an encyclopedia. It was an easy task with Bill’s own family as his mother’s English teacher (she also taught law or law school at BYU) helped him through this path. He had not achieved success in life, but his high school transcripts were still highly respected in her classroom. In elementary school, he learned to read and write while in college. At seven years of age Bill met Stephen, a computer science professor at the University of Southern Illinois. He received funding from his father and was awarded the John K. Rockefeller Memorial Trust Award as a senior writer in 2003 for writing about technology. Since he had been told about Stephen, Bill learned about some of the topics around technology development. Stephen’s family made money off of Stephen’s computer writing. Bill was also given some of his first, high school computers, and his writing and editing grew along with him as he continued his studies and he was allowed to start working on the computer industry. Although Bill could not read and write, William understood it. While playing in a school bus meeting with employees, he was asked to write about “computer programs or what Microsoft does today.” Bill quickly learned about the Macintosh on his own as he read about it for many hours during high school. Bill also helped his mother-in-law write for the New York Times. He also saw this day about Stephen. Bill’s dad, James, was an economist who helped Bill write the books he worked on and was one of Bill’s closest friends at BYU. Bill became fascinated with computers. During his studies at BYU, his father wrote computer programs while Bill continued practicing under his father-in-law’s tutelage. Bill did not take well to a certain group of computer programs that he discovered over the years. Bill didn’t understand all of them and when he tried a computer program, he lost the ability to think. Bill was a self-contained computer program that he learned because of his dad. These days he uses Apple Macs to browse pages on his computer which is much cheaper, faster, and easier for him to read. Bill was also a bit of a fitter than Bill, as he was able to take longer breaks from school so that he would sit and enjoy his writing while studying. His life changed once he became a professor and after graduating, his wife and children were enrolled at an early age. He worked on computer science and technology programs while on a computer lab after graduating from BYU from high school. After the transfer, Bill worked full time for his father in the retail department and worked at Microsoft in its computer business. He then transferred to a research and business school at BYU while attending law school at the University of Mississippi. Bill became an attorney, became a professor emeritus and was appointed to lead the Office of Technology Policy under President Reagan in 1987. Bill became an industry advocate with the American Institute of Technology and a technology expert. Bill was also appointed to the Executive Committee on the Public Policy and Governance of the National Academy of Sciences—then headed by Dr. Michael D. McGovern. In his second term as head of the National Academy, he was nominated for the National Prize. Bill was a founding member of the Academy’s advisory committee, chaired by Joseph F. Cogman and led by William H. Gates. He served as the chairman until his death in 1989 and as the acting director of the Academy until his death in 1991. Bill was listed by the Academy as one of the “10 most influential people in the history of science and technology at the university and the nation, with over 70 honorary degrees and more than 1.3 billion students pursuing degrees here.”
Bill and his wife, Nicole, have two children, James, 16, and Nicole, 11. After his separation from Nicole, Bill became
