The media is seen as a pawn of the establishment and those with access to the media have power whilst those who do not are powerless.Then came the 60’s and the widespread acceptance of television led to the rising importance of the medium and an understanding that control or access to that medium was central.The definition of crime through this new social interpretation started to acknowledge that a media was could now bring public awareness of crime as being socially harmful to a wider audience.The elites that now control the media have the ability to minimise certain criminal aspects and enhance others to maximise their social positions and put forward whatever perspective is required at the time.The sensationalization of crime through cop shows, true crimes exposes are now raising the visability of criminalization. TV has taken the mystique out of crime and made it fashionable. Certain types of crime become more popular and others retreat in importance. For instance, sexual crime and domestic violence are now receiving more attention whilst crimes against religious organizations are being marginalised. Crime does dominate popular culture to the exclusion of all else.The energy for this social debate is mirrored by the media. Certain crimes become the flavour of the month and therefore receive media heat..
