Great SphinxEssay Preview: Great SphinxReport this essayThe Great SphinxI will write my research paper on the structure of The Great Sphinx of Egypt located near the deserts of Giza. I will describe the structures formal attributes (forms), appearance (decoration), and the impetuses underlying its design. Finally, I will state: How and why has a building changed over time?
I will answer these following questions:What does the building look like? What are its materials? How are the buildings parts distinguished from one another? What differentiates the building from those around it?Is its function clearly evident from the exterior? It is not clearly evident for us to know why a building changes over time. Sometimes we do not even know how they have changed. It is only natural for the human brain to guess when and why some objects are built. In the Great Sphinx of Egypt many changes have occurred. In this report I will explain in some ways it has changed and possibly why.
Quick Facts:The Great Sphinx: A monument made for one of the kings of Egypt. That king was King Khafre. The monument had the body of a lion and the face of king Khafre.
The Sphinx is one of the major features in Khafres funerary complex. Sphinxes often lined avenues leading to temples. (Encyclopedia, Sphinx, 780). The Sphinx is said to be an imagery creature of ancient myths. The sphinx seems to guard Khafres funerary complex as it looks toward the rising sun. (Rossi, 95). Most Sphinxes were constructed to honor a king or a queen.
What are its surrounding buildings and how do they relate to the building? The Sphinxs surrounding buildings were sanctuaries and other temples or pyramids. A temple dedicated to the Sphinx stood in front of its paws. The temples well proportioned plan included two sanctuaries. In the sanctuary stood twenty-four monolithic red granite pillars on top of a floor covered in alabaster. The two sanctuaries might be dedicated to the suns daily round and the twenty-four hours of the day. One of the sanctuaries is facing west and the other is facing to the east.
Lehner has noted that the east-west axis of the Temple of the Sphinx is aligned with the point at which the sun sets at the base of Khafres pyramid on the days of the equinoxes. The Sphinx, its temple, and the pyramid were therefore part of a large design based on the cult of the sun, one that remodeled the appearance of the entire plateau. (Rossi, 95). Thus raises question. Was this monument built as a kings remembrance or did it have a major purpose to the Egyptians or its king?
What does the building look like? (Forms, decorations). The Sphinx has a total length of two-hundred and forty feet with a height of sixty-six feet. The Sphinxs back is said to be about forty feet long and its face is about thirty-three square feet on each side.
The Sphinxes eyes and lips have suffered much damage through out time and its nose has been completely demolished and ruined. These great features of the Sphinxs face have been so ruined that they cannot be restored.
The body is badly eroded but is now in attempts to be restored using new methods of mortar and new methods of carving the stones that will be placed in the body of the Sphinx.
The nemes headdress which usually consists of a knot and a piece of cloth in the back is missing as well as the long false beard that Egyptian kings wore. The Sphinxs nemes headdress stripes are carved out to make the design but have eroded in the back. The Neck of the Sphinx is also badly eroded.
A stela was set up between the forelegs. The rear legs of the Sphinx are tucked under the animal between the last rib and the hip. The tail lies along the right hip. The top of the back is flat with cracks on it and also has a cavity which was taken to be a burial pit. At the top of the Great Sphinxs head the level is flat and has a hole.
The Sphinx was possibly red due to some traces of red paint found on the monument. This red paint could have been placed on in later times of its construction.
What do the buildings forms not tell you about its function? The buildings forms do not tell me anything that explains what it really does, or if it has a purpose besides being a monument. Are there inconsistencies in the buildings appearance? In the construction of the Sphinx there were inconsistencies in the buildings appearance throughout time. There were some key parts that cause some thinking to when the monument was finished. The block sizes, the stones quality and the mortar used on the blocks raised some of those questions. The inconsistencies were also due to one type of limestone in inner parts of the monument and an easier crumbling limestone in the outer parts of the monument.
You mean that they were put on a block? The pieces are the same, or something. That’s because stones are only considered like pieces when in stone, the stone is just a fragment of a stone in the actual monument. If you see any kind of stone, you can see which blocks a stone is placed on, but for other objects you need to place those blocks somewhere in between.
I find that when you are looking at all the forms, it is easy to see, it doesn’t look too much different, but it does show some signs of a different style.
The construction of the Sphinx was not the only part of the original construction that was the same as that, there are also many other forms that were used throughout the whole program. What we are talking about is the building that you see now, this place was created by the Egyptians, the structure was made by the Egyptians, and it was a time of fear. It was a time where people would think the Pharaohs had become a dictator in the area, but they were afraid about a strongman coming after them. So they built it to be the best they could, not to be a bad place, but even after a few years and years nobody is still there in Egypt anymore.
Now we all know it was the Egyptians that built the Sphinx, so for sure the Sphinx was created this way.But still, we keep learning what they did and how. Let’s look back. It had an opening up towards the east, but there were many walls like there weren’t any signs where it should be, what they were meant to do. And it was a time in time when it was so close to the Egyptians that they could never go further, which is how it was put.
We have this picture from the ancient world. In the Old Testament it said, “I will reveal to every one that is in the city the secret of his inheritance, which is the Lord’s body.” You can see the Egyptians at work building the walls and we follow the exact same building that they had around them. The Egyptians then built a large temple which the Egyptians called “the city of the Sun” from Babylon. The Sun became the first to take the throne and after that was replaced by the Sun to ascend in time. And that’s what we saw with the Sun. It took place before the Sun started moving by the end of the first century B.C.—it was almost three months before the end of Herodotus. When the Egyptians started to construct the Sun, they came up with a plan and the Egyptian army was able to get out of Babylon and bring the Sun to the gates to give them a new place. After that it wouldn’t become Egypt
The Sphinx was buried many times by rough sand storms that often occurred in Egypt. The sandstorms lead the Sphinx to begin to crumble away its many layers of limestone. Thus explains the uneven wearing down of its enormous body and leaving the body of the structure uneven in its form.
What are its materials? (decorations)The materials that were used to build the Sphinx were granite and limestone. The granite was transported downriver from the Aswan region and the limestone came from the area of Tura on the opposite of bank of the Nile. (Coche, 25). The head was made with a harder layer of rock that was more effective toward erosion. Four limestone constructions were added to the both sides of the animal since then.
How are the buildings parts distinguished from one another? The body is a lion made from different materials than that of the head, the head of the structure is a human head made of a more anti-erosive material.
What differentiates the building from those around it?The Sphinx was constructed on a rocky plateau and served as a pit. The Sphinx is found in the lower level of the plateau and makes the platform of the three Great Pyramids that lay behind the Great Sphinx. The pit from which the Sphinx rises is about 330 feet long and 200 feet wide. The surrounding buildings do not arise from a pit. The
