Jbl SubwoofersEssay Preview: Jbl SubwoofersReport this essayIn the Live Sound Community, most companies are always looking to acquire the latest equipment on the market. This is because the client base has become familiar with the Harman Corporation JBL product line. Right now, the latest desire is Compact Subwoofers. These sought after subwoofers are popular because of their size, obvious square shape, low profile, and easy truck packing. There are a couple options available to choose. The JBL SRX 718 Series and STX 818 Series are very popular. The JBL SRX series has advantages that the STX series cannot offer and vice versa. The SRX and the STX models are very different. The purpose of this essay is to contrast these two subwoofer speakers driver type, weight, dimensions, power ratings, maximum sound pressure level, frequency range, and price.
JBL 912 Series 818 Subwoofers: Avant-Garde JBL 912 is the second 9 inch subwoofer found in our test suite, a small but powerful 4 watt 12A tweeter. It performs very well on all sounds, and also at full sound quality on low, moderate, heavy music. It is very quiet and uses just 5 watts of audio power for optimal sound reproduction for the most demanding music listening style. The 6 inch JBL 912 is designed with the JBL SRX 718 in mind, as it does not offer very low or high noise responses and is very quiet, though it is quite quiet. The JBL SRX 718 is a great choice for a quiet, wide sound system that could work at lower volume levels. The price is the same for the JBL 912 but this is just as important for the 718.
The JBL 912 is an excellent choice in a small room to add in a subwoofer to your home theater. It can be located with a low level power supply, although our JBL 912 doesn’t support any type of low power. It is also fairly expensive and has a very small footprint. If they need a small subwoofer enclosure, the JBL SRX 818 can often be found for around $60 or more and is ideal for a mid-tier subwoofer or subwoofer with low volumes. The SRX 818 is very quiet, although it has limited power and power options. If using a Subwoofer with this price range, most reviewers point to the SRX 818. However, the SRX 818 is the very first subwoofer that we have seen that actually supports low power (and low power output) power. The subwoofer enclosure is great for a small room if it can be removed or if you choose to build a sub to use inside of your home theater.
The JBL 912 Subwoofer’s power output is very powerful and is available in either an integrated 120W or 50W amp. In general, the JBL 912 has a wide range of high end output options, but it does have a few more than the standard crossover options. The SRX 818 is a truly amazing subwoofer choice. It is very inexpensive and very simple to build. The 9 inch subwoofer is also easy to install and will almost certainly last for years for most people. The SRX 818 is ideal for a large room. While compact, it’s simple to assemble and it provides more than just a large subwoofer. It is extremely quiet, but it is very quiet overall. An important consideration to use when building for small, sublessing rooms is that low current limiting circuits in the subwoofer will not work properly and the frequency gain will be too low.

The first subwoofer I am discussing is the SRX 718S. This particular model appealed to me a while back. My company recently acquired six of these. What made these unique was their lightweight, and portability. Using a neodymium magnet was how JBL achieved the lighter weight. At only seventy-nine pounds, these were ideal for most applications. With the dimensions being 20.0 inches high, 23.5 inches wide, and 29.5 inches deep, they are the perfect size. These subwoofers have a power rating of 800 watts continuous, 1600 watts programmed, and 3200 watts peak. The maximum Sound Pressure Level (SPL) is at 130 decibels (db). This happens to be ten decibels quieter than a passing jet plane at an altitude of 100 feet. The frequency range is 31 Hz to 220 Hz. The price currently is $739.00. Overall, this is a very good compact Subwoofer.
The second subwoofer I am discussing is the STX 818S. This compact subwoofer is brand new to the market. The weight is 100 lbs. This is twenty-one pounds heavier than its predecessor the SRX does. The increase in weight came from JBL resorting back to using ceramic driver magnets. The dimensions came in at 22.0 inches high, 21.4 inches wide and 28.3 inches deep. The power rating is remarkable at 1000 watts continuous, 2000 watts programmed and 4000 watts peak. Maximum sound pressure levels are 132 decibels (db). The frequency range on this subwoofer is 35 Hz to 250 Hz. The price for this subwoofer came in at a whopping $1199.00.
Looking at both options, each of them pack a punch for their comparatively small size. The choice would come down to user preference and budget. With back injuries on the rise in this profession, some companies will opt for the lighter weight subwoofer. On the other hand, some companies may go for the superior power ratings, which produce a greater sound pressure level. The other deciding factor for some companies would come down to price. Both models are an excellent buy. Therefore, whichever model you choose, you should be pleased with your purchase.
