While many people may not understand exactly what type II diabetes is, it is actually quite simple: “Type II diabetes is a chronic condition that affects the way your body metabolizes sugar (glucose)- your body’s main source of fuel” (Mayo Clinic, 2006). Type II diabetes is the most common type of diabetes, with approximately 90 to 95% of the 21 million Americans who suffer from diabetes have type II diabetes. It has been estimated that one-third of people with type II are not aware that they have it; if it goes undiagnosed for a long period of time the disease can become life-threatening (Mayo Clinic, 2006).
