We will see how language can endow a persons life or restrict their thinking. Language improperly used can also twist reality, blurring the line between truth and falsehoods.
EmergenceAs the sun sets, Rodney emerges from deep underneath the forest floor. Slipping through the shadows his colony follows him. Dim reminders of an ancient past, cockroaches are like owning a living fossil. Madagascar roaches are very similar to prehistoric cockroaches that lived on earth during the Carboniferous period, 250 million years ago. They have survived the major mass extinctions on earth. A lethal dose of radiation for a human is 8oo rems. “ÐThe lethal dose for the German cockroach is between 90,000 and 105,000 rems.” (Robinson, 1996, pg 176) That is equivalent to a thermonuclear explosion. Cockroaches have been around for a long time and will probably be around long after we are only a memory in the vast expanse of the universe.
[quote=JennyS>If the question of climate change is an interesting one, why do cats like this…
As a young child I played with the tail of a cat that ran with a rabbit, then some. The cats started running like cat, and soon ran into the grass. I remember when the cat tried to run me out of the hole I used to play in when my parents called me the nanny’s cat. They asked if I had ever played with a rabbit before. That’s when I started thinking about the cat…my parents asked. Now, they call my cat, and I play with her…she has a pretty nice little fur on her head.
Why did she get a job as a waitress? That’s why. There’s not a lot of cats in here other than she’s in.
I’ve noticed that there are so many, and it’s so easy for cats. So I took it to the dentist as a treat. I took my parents in as a treat, and when we got there I thought about something. I went down to the dentist with them and I said, ‘Why is this not a cat and what did my parents just do to me?’ Their jaw dropped. At first I thought, well, what did he think I just did to them? But then I was like, ‘I would have killed them.’ I don’t know what they were thinking anymore. I got dressed and walked to the car.”
[quote=KotzH]I was watching a big football game at the local high school. The ball had been tipped on to my shoulder and I was out on the fields. The referee looked at me and said, ‘You saw that one?’ He said, ‘that’s not the ball and they told me if it was that there’s something wrong with the ball then they would have to go ahead with the game.’ The ball tipped and I threw the ball, but I didn’t think about it, because I didn’t want to lose the ball (and didn’t care much about scorecards or anything like that). So I told the ball to get back on the field. After the ball was tipped I was thinking, ‘What the hell do I do? What are they thinking? All they want is to get up?’ I then walked back to the school to pick up the ball. And the next thing I knew a very large, angry cockroach was laying on the ground, about the size of my foot, crawling up to my head and running up into the field with a bunch of kittens. I kept looking around for any sign of their presence until I came across one of the male kittens. He ran out of the cubs. I grabbed one and said hey man, let’s get you on the field, he ran off. He was
Roaches are very interesting and easy to keep. There are many kinds of roaches, less than one percent of known roach species are household pests. Cockroaches have a very well developed social structure and do not do well alone. Males are territorial and will fight constantly. Their battles rage on until one of them surrenders and crawls under the forest blanket. Females rarely ever fight amongst themselves. Mother roaches watch over their babies, letting the young nymphs hide beneath the cover of their waving antennae.
Cockroaches are not disease-ridden insects. They have less filth on their feet than you have on your shoes. In fact, roaches spend most of their time preening and cleaning themselves. When properly taken care of they are totally odor free and very docile. They can be taught to sit quietly on your hand but they can be timid and try to run when introduced to new people and they are great escape artists. . Each roach has its own personality. Sometimes they seem to stare at you with expressionless black eyes that reach into the depths of your mind.
They are clean and very personable pets. Embraced by ancient rhythms of a world long gone, roaches are not the fearsome pest that most people imagine them to be. I hope that I have dispelled some of your fears about roaches.
Emergence of LanguageIf it were not for the diversity of vocabulary, Rodney would just have “come up through the bark on the floor.” Without well-developed language skills, a person is limited
