Research Paper “the Pritzker Pavilion”Essay Preview: Research Paper “the Pritzker Pavilion”Report this essayThe Pritzker PavilionChicago is one of the largest and most beautiful cities and home to many wonderful parks and venues. It is also true that the newest and most innovative is the Jay Pritzker Pavilion located right in the heart of downtown Chicago at Millennium Park on Randolph Street between Michigan and Columbus Avenue. The Pavilion stands 120-feet high, with a billowing headdress of brushed stainless steel ribbons that frame the acoustics of an indoor concert hail by distributing enhanced sound equally over both fixed seats and the lawn. The Jay Pritzker Pavilion is home to the Grant Park Orchestra and music festival where varieties of outdoor concerts and free events take place specifically during the warm summer season. While it is true that this venue is a great place to enjoy outdoor concerts and summer events, the pavilion is also known for its beautiful and artistic architecture.
Famous architect Frank Gehry is responsible for the popular attractions such as the Jay Pritzker pavilion and the BP Bridge located in Millennium Park. He is an award winning architect who was born in Toronto February 28th, 1929. In 1947 while he was still a young teen Gehry moved to Los Angeles with his family and eventually became a citizen of the United States. Later in his life he attended a Los Angeles City College where he enrolled in his first architecture class and was immediately fascinated by the different varieties of art and after a lot of hard work and determination he became a successful architect. He eventually established his own company known as Ghery Partners, LLP. He worked with many international styles, but he was mostly passionate about the avant-garde arts scene since he grew up surrounded by the beach communities of Santa Monica and Venice.
This is a new painting that is at first glance to suggest that Gehry was making a sort of spiritual and historical visit to America and that it was a visit he himself would be honored to participate in. It may look like an allegory to modern tourists but for those not yet prepared to go any further, it is an interesting and intimate portrait of Gehry that reveals something about what they would be doing on his own terms.
The picture is by artist Daniel Mertens (1892, 1907) who would become one of the most noted figures in contemporary architecture in the mid 90s.
When I was in California, after a little while at a private school, the city of Pasadena (California’s most historic city) and I got along nicely. I met Gehry’s older brother, a very powerful young man from Philadelphia named John Gehry and we were just finishing our year’s class. My younger brother had gone to an art school (the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign) in Pennsylvania – I thought I was a fool for not thinking of the area as his university area. But I said, “Eh?” As he walked up to me, his head hung above his shoulders and he said, “So you understand that, but there was a time you saw an artwork in the United States that was at once architectural and American in aesthetic.”
At that time, I did not have much to do but I came from an art and research background to work on paintings of American paintings.”
I found out that all the paintings on the exhibit were from my own experience. It was one of those beautiful pieces from my late childhood that I looked at and it took off my mind. I was intrigued by the fact that they were painted on an enormous scale. I thought to myself… what if this is how this place came to be?”
It’s not that my favorite art is an American painting by John Gehry. Some of this is probably because the painting is all about a city that is not the capital of this land, but more than that, it’s meant to be something different. It’s an intimate portrait of the life and work of John Gehry. I think a little bit of the beauty of this painting in our own lives comes from the way our children are taught to speak of it.
Some of this is probably because the painter’s family was located in the city after the birth of the American Revolution.
My wife and I were not to see John Gehry’s work just yet but we remember with pride his great paintings of America in the 1920s and 1930s. This story is not an allegory to modern tourists who may see something that is a bit different than what they already think the world is looking at.

Frank Gehry was known for his many talented architectural structures many that he had built such as furniture, homes, the Santa Monica Place shopping mall, the Virta furniture factory in Basel, Switzerland, and the Virta design Museum in Germany, the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, Spain and many more. Other than the Jay Pritzker Pavilion, Ghery was responsible for the completion of other wonderful concert venues like the Walt Disney Concert hall in downtown Los Angeles and the New World Symphony Concert Hall in Miami Beach.
Chicago has always been a wonderful with a beautiful skyline, but the Jay Pritzker Pavilion was a great addition to our amazing city. I myself have been to Millennium Park to see the different pieces of art, the BP Bridge, and the Pritzker Pavilion and I am always astonished by how gorgeous and creative everything looks. It definitely makes me appreciate my city much more. However, it is unfortunate that I have not yet had the opportunity to attend one of the concerts at the Pritzker Pavilion, but I am excited to say that I have now placed it on my list of things to do during the summer of 2012.
