Concussions in Football
In the article, Reducing High School Football Concussions, author Michael Bargo Jr. argues that football is becoming too dangerous for the players and rules need to be made to avoid violent play. Bargo has recently gone to a football game and noticed that a majority of the players often engage in helmet to helmet contact, he says “these actions can cause serious injury and even death” (1). The coaches must train players to make hits that are legal and make sure all players are engaged in sportsmanlike conduct. Usually, it is the job of officials at the football game to notice rough play or improper tackles. Unfortunately, sometimes the officials do not pick up on these hits, or have personal ties to a team and refuses to call anything against them. Bargo suggests that officials should be allowed to throw flags against a specific player and after they receive 3 flags said player will suffer a suspension from the next 3 games. Another suggestion Bargo has is that high school football games could involve local law enforcement. High school officials and public high school state organizations want complete control over high school sports and according to Bargo they should be held accountable for how “effectively they supervise games” (1). Bargo acknowledges that players and fan will not like these new rules because of excessive delays, but they are necessary to avoid serious injuries like brain and spinal damage. Bargo suggests that police should have the power to remove a player, and review
