In year 2000 alone there was a reported 27,714 thousand infant deaths due to homicide. Homicide accounts for more than one in five injury-related deaths among infants (under one year of age) in the United States. Infants are most likely to be killed by their mother during the first week of life but are more likely to be killed by a male (usually their father or step-father) thereafter. Half of all infant homicides occur by the fourth month of life, and the risk of infant homicide is the highest on the day of birth. If these facts dont disturb you, then Im afraid not much will. Based on these statistics alone one might understand why I (among many others) feel a couple should obtain a license to bare children. I know this proposal continues to be a delicate issue among most for fear of a violation of rights and freedom. But I dont see it that way at all. This license would not be taking away your freedom or right to bare children it would merely state that you must meet a certain criteria and obtain parental education first!! When the law was passed that one must legally attain a drivers license to drive in the U.S. it had a positive influence on society by decreasing the number of casualties and deaths on the road. The Child/Parenting license will do the same. I believe it would take such numbers as 27,714 and drastically decrease them. How could you argue that? If we as a society could decrease the number of infants thrown in dumpsters daily, or smothered by pillows or even simply neglected to the point of death, then why wouldnt we. I believe if people had to obtain a license, they would only have kids if they really had a desire to, and not just on accident. This alone would decrease the number of infant deaths.
