Index/LiteraturePride and PrejudiceJane Austen has drawn a Perfect picture of gender issues and class struggle in her novel ‘Pride and Prejudice ‘. Although we can say that the picture is an implicit one. With the two inches of ivory she has carved a beautiful sculpture which appears smiling from outside. Only if we tries to look hither and study each and every minute detail, we shall find the concealed truth. The novel appears to be a perfect romantic tale. But we should not forget that Austen is a perfect ironist, with the sharp nib of irony she pens down indirectly the miserable and helpless situation of women which was prevalent during her period .throughout the novel we find that marriage is more an institution of women’s security rather than a love filled relationship. During Austen’s time women had no outlet in industry, commerce, business or education. The novel dramatize the economic inequality of women showing how women had to marry undesirable mates in order to get financial security.
