Abortion is always a big topic of conversation. Everyone has his or her own opinion of it, of course. Some people have mixed feelings on the subject. They can see why people believe it should be legal, and they can see why people believe it should be illegal. So the question is “should abortion be legal?” My answer to that question would be yes with restrictions. In this paper, I will explain what I mean by “with restrictions.”
A major aspect of the debate over abortion concerns the use of terminology. The largest point of contention involving terminology is the label applied to what or who is being aborted. Those who think abortion should be illegal often use the terms “unborn child” and “unborn baby.” Those who think abortion should be legal often use the word “fetus.”
Abortion should be legal with restrictions. When I say “with restrictions,” what I mean by that is if the pregnancy is life threatening for the mother or child. If the doctor tells the woman that she or the child could possibly die if she carries the baby full term, then yes the woman should be allowed to make the decision on whether she wants to go ahead and abort the pregnancy or take that risk. I really believe that should be the only reason any woman should be allowed to have an abortion.
The Democratic Party platform states that abortion should be legal, supports the Supreme Court ruling Roe v. Wade, and supports the use of taxpayer funding to perform abortions. The Republican Party platform states that abortion should be illegal and supports a Constitutional Amendment that would assure preborn humans the right to life. Several Republicans have sponsored at least twenty-three resolutions proposing a Constitutional Amendment that would guarantee preborn humans the right to life, all of them containing an exception to protect the life of the mother, six of these resolutions also include exceptions for causes of rape and incest.
Eugene Brusky Jr. 29, Meteorologist Green Bay, Wis. says no to legalized abortion. He states, “Legalized abortion gives way too many opportunities for irresponsibility and abuse.” (McLean, 1989). I have to agree with that. If abortion is legal for any woman then there will be women getting abortions just because they do not want a child. If a woman does get pregnant and does not want a child, there is always adoption. There are plenty of women out there that want children but cannot have any. There are adoption agencies that will work with them to find a suitable couple to adopt the child.
Here are a few states laws about abortion as of June 1, 2012. Twenty-six states have a law in effect that requires
