Music Critique Rough DraftI believe that cultivated and vernacular music are the same thing. I believe that due to the fact that cultivated music was first and then vernacular came from inspiration of that. Vernacular music is more of what people in my current generation listen to and enjoy more. In my opinion I prefer vernacular music but the point is that everything started from cultivated music. Cultivated music was created many years ago and was the original type of music everyone listened to. Cultivated music is based off of instruments like strings, percussion, brass and woodwinds, basically an orchestra. Cultivated music is more serious and formal when it comes to performances. Piano Concerto is a performance I chose for cultivated music. I noticed that everyone in the room is sitting down and concentrating on what they are listening to and that for me is something I do not notice with vernacular songs unless it is a acoustic performance but either way the singers interact with one another. Also in the performance for Piano Concerto they have a person guiding everyone and keeping everyone on track so it is a huge difference from other modern day performances. I feel like cultivated music was a great way start to music because it went through so many different phases and there were eras that only focused on only cultivated music and we took that and made our own thing now. This leads me to vernacular music, vernacular music is music that has singing in it unlike cultivated. Imagine Dragons performance was a good choice to see the how cultivated music influenced all these modern songs. First thing I noticed of the concert is the energy the fans had, everyone was jumping and screaming and also singing along with the music. Everyone there were much more younger than in the other performance, Piano Concerto. As I listened to the songs I heard guitars which is part of the strings family and also a drum set which is percussion. All these instruments were created from inspiration of the old and original percussion and strings. The artists were all dancing and making the atmosphere happy and enjoyable. They were focused in what they were doing but also performing and doing other things at the same time, they were not formal like the cultivated performance but they still performed their music so it’s all the same in the end. The tempo for cultivated was slower than vernacular and there was a lot of drama in the sounds too. An image of what seems to be happening pops up in my head so it is word painting as well. Both have a melody and a bit of harmony at moments. Cultivated and vernacular music send messages to people, even though there were no words with Piano Concerto, I got a message of happiness then sadness comes too, so a story is being told in the process and all the sounds and the way they are done makes it even more of a dramatic story. With Imagine Dragon the singer sings about how people underestimated him and didn’t think he would make it and it is a motivational song to not give up and it is a good thing too because the audience for this music is kids and teenagers and most of us lack motivation nowadays. Both of these music type are enjoyable but I think if I listen to cultivated music it would be with the purpose to learn how music began and how it has changed over the years. It also is a good way to listen to instruments and how they work together. I listen to vernacular music everyday so I am pretty used to it and I feel like i relate to it more than with cultivated music. In conclusion, cultivated music is what influenced people to begin to sing in songs and be more free about how they want to listen to music, and that is how vernacular is now around. Possibly over the years we repeat and listen to cultivated again since history repeats.
